• Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço) - Praça do Comércio is a vast plaza facing the harbor. Positioned to the south along the Tagus River (Tejo), it is still often referred to in Portuguese as Terreiro do Paço. Following the 1755 earthquake, the plaza underwent a complete redesign as part of the reconstruction of the Pombaline Downtown. From the 19th century onwards, Praça do Comércio became the location for several key Portuguese state departments.
• Ponte 25 de Abril - Initially named Salazar Bridge upon its opening on August 6, 1966, the bridge was renamed after the Carnation Revolution in 1974, which marked the end of Salazar’s regime. It is now known as the 25 de Abril Bridge, commemorating the revolution’s date. Often referred to as the Tagus River Bridge, its design is inspired by two San Francisco Bay Area bridges. The bridge shares the same International Orange paint as the Golden Gate Bridge and has a design similar to the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. Both the Bay Bridge and the 25 de Abril Bridge were constructed by the same company.
• MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology - MAAT is a cultural initiative in Lisbon focusing on Art, Architecture, and Technology. The €20 million museum is located on the River Tagus, west of the city center, and is considered “one of Europe’s most lyrical new museums.” It creates a link between the new building and the Tejo Power Station. The museum was designed by Amanda Levete Architects.
• MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology - The Tejo Power Station is a leading example of Portugal’s industrial architecture from the early 20th century and is among the country’s most visited museums.
• Padrão dos Descobrimentos - This monument was initially conceived in 1939 by Portuguese architect José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida as a temporary beacon for the Portuguese World Exhibition in June 1940. The permanent monument was erected in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Infante Henry the Navigator.
• Mosteiro dos Jerónimos - The monastery is a prime example of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline architectural style in Lisbon. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém, in 1983.
• Torre de Belém - Officially known as the Tower of Saint Vincent, Belém Tower is a 16th-century fortification in Lisbon that served as a departure and arrival point for Portuguese explorers and as a ceremonial gateway to the city. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
• Farol do Bugio - The Bugio Lighthouse is located on an island in the River Tagus estuary at the Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio.
• Santuário Nacional de Cristo Rei - The Sanctuary of Christ the King is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, overlooking Lisbon from Almada. The statue of Christ, reminiscent of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, forms a cross with its arms extended towards Lisbon as if embracing the city.
• Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria - São Jorge Castle is a historic fortress situated on a hill that has played a significant role in Lisbon’s history. Since the 12th century, the castle has served variously as a royal palace, military barracks, home to the Torre do Tombo National Archive, and now as a national monument and museum. Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district, descends the southern slope from São Jorge Castle to the River Tagus. Its name, derived from the Arabic Al-hamma, means fountains or baths. Despite the extensive damage caused by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, Alfama remained largely intact. The Mouraria, or Moorish quarter, is one of Lisbon’s most traditional neighborhoods, although many of its old buildings were demolished by the Estado Novo between the 1930s and 1970s. It is named for the Muslims who were confined to this area after the reconquest of Lisbon.
