- Palácio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz - The Royal Palace of Queluz, also known as the National Palace of Queluz, is an 18th-century palace. It was constructed as a summer retreat for D. Pedro de Bragança and is one of the last significant Rococo-style buildings in Europe.
This palace served as a discreet place of confinement for Queen D. Maria I during her period of madness, particularly after D. Pedro’s death in 1786. Following a fire at the Palácio da Ajuda in 1794, the Palace of Queluz became the official residence of the Portuguese Prince Regent, the future D. João VI, and his family. It remained their residence until the Royal Family fled to Brazil in 1807 due to the French invasions.
