If you want a thoughtful, personalized day trip from Lisbon, this is it.
The Full Experience (for those who like the details):
We treated ourselves to a private day tour with Acácia Tours to Sintra, Cabo da Roca, and Cascais — and it was worth every single penny. We were a family of four — a couple travelling with two young adults — and from the start, we had the opportunity to tailor the day around what we enjoy most: history, meaningful places, great food, and time to really experience each stop.
This was not a typical group tour. There was no rigid itinerary and no sense of being rushed or boxed in. Instead, the day adapted naturally to our interests, energy level, and curiosity — something that’s incredibly rare to find.
What truly sets this tour apart is perspective: we’ve done guided tours in many countries, and this experience was genuinely above and beyond. It struck a rare balance — deeply informative without feeling scripted, efficient without feeling rushed, and relaxed while still covering an impressive amount in one day.
We were picked up right at our apartment and headed straight to Sintra, wandering through the charming Old Town before visiting Quinta da Regaleira.
And the Initiation Well… wow.
Descending its spiraling path — designed to symbolize rebirth and transformation — was one of those moments that stays with you, not just visually, but emotionally.
Next up was Pena Palace.
Perched high above Sintra, colourful and dramatic, it truly feels like a fairytale. Learning about its origins — built by King Ferdinand II as an imaginative, romantic retreat inspired by Moorish palaces in southern Spain — added so much depth. Understanding the symbolism and layered architectural styles completely changed how we experienced the palace.
From there, we headed into the Colares wine region for a visit to Adega Regional de Colares — one of the rarest wine regions in the world. The ungrafted vines grow in deep sand, many over a century old, protected from phylloxera. These wines are extremely limited and rarely available outside Portugal, which made the tasting feel truly special and unforgettable.
Lunch by the ocean was generous, fresh, and perfectly timed.
We then visited Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe — dramatic, powerful, and awe-inspiring.
The day ended in Cascais, which felt especially magical with festive lights, decorations, and lively markets adding warmth and charm to this elegant seaside town.
Some days are about what you see.
Others are about what you feel.
This day was both.
If you’re looking for a private, customizable, insightful tour that works for families, couples, and multi-generational groups — and one that truly stands out even compared to international travel experiences — Acácia Tours delivers something exceptional.

Best Toir Experience in Portugal! - Absolutely fabulous experience!!! We actually have taken three tours with Acacia over this last two weeks. The first was a holiday market tour before New Year’s Eve, then a day trip to Sintra, and this last two days we traveled to the southern parts of the country with an overnight at an eco hotel that was just a gorgeous experience.
Daniel, the owner of the company, is an absolutely delightful tour guide with an enormous knowledge of the country and its rich history. And all experiences and choices were curated and communicated with grace and a fabulous sense of humor as well!
My husband and I love a breath of experience when we travel. We enjoy both the “High end” moments and spots, but equally if not more so enjoy being taken to the local gems and hot spots that only a local guide could introduce us to. Across the board, and in all aspects, it was awesome. Top notch wine tastings paired with local seafood dives, gorgeous hotels, and everything in between.
My husband and I couldn’t recommend this experience more enthusiastically— and we will look forward to our next adventure with Daniel and Acacia— Returning in March in fact! First for their oysters and bubbles experience, and then for their cork forest and black pig experience that both sound incredible. Oh! And I most once again give a shout out to their tour guide Edward, who is also a delightful historian and tour guide! A+++++ truly and all around! 🇵🇹♥️🇵🇹

Experiencing Sintra and Cascais with Daniel! - We had a wonderful time on this day-long van tour. The sites, the guide, the information and the lunch were all incredible and added to a great vacation experience. The many stops and views along the way were superb. Daniel, our guide and driver, was exceptionally responsible, knowledgeable and personable given his young age (25?). He was very enthusiastic and engaging, showing an interest in each person on the tour. The seafood lunch break was nice but a little too long for our preference. We would highly recommend this trip and this guide. The value for the money was great.

Sintra day ☀️ - The way to the Pena Castle was close that day, but Daniel took us to see another castle instead of Pena.
He took us in a journey through breathtaking sites of Sintra and the coast side, but also an enriching and personalized experience that resonates long after the day concludes.
Unforgettable day with friends!
Many thnxx Daniel!
Greetings from the Duch Eric & Mayca

Incredible day, historical and thoughtful - The Acacia Tour team took such great care of me and my family. My dad has some mobility issues and the guide Daniel was so thoughtful with parking, and making sure we didn't walk too much. We stopped at an incredible restaurant for lunch near the ocean which was honestly breathtaking and delicious. Daniel was so knowledgeable about the Palace and the history of Sintra. It was a great day and I would recommend Acacia Tours to anyone visiting Portugal.

You'll never get this experience elsewhere - Antoine went above and beyond to show my wife and I the most incredible time in and around Sintra. We were only in Lisbon for a couple of days and had other commitments during the day, but he accommodated us and still managed to give an amazing tour on an abbreviated afternoon/evening schedule. It didn't even matter that it rained on us! Antoine has a love for and deep knowledge of Portuguese history, and his storytelling adds so much to the already incredible sites. He's also just a great guy who's sincerely invested in his guests and their experience. I really can't imagine anyone doing it better than him. Book this tour!

Honeymoon in Portugal - Sintra/Pena Palace - We recently booked a tour for Sintra while on our honeymoon. Antoine was our guide and it could not have been a better experience. His attention to detail and knowledge of Portuguese history was greatly appreciated and made it a trip that we will never forget. Make sure to ask for Antoine if you book a tour!

Truly incredible. Thank you Antoine! - Let me start by saying this – get the private tour guide for Pena Palace. Unless you’re someone who’s fine with complicated logistics, large crowds, and long queues, then you can absolutely navigate getting to Sintra and up to the palace on your own.
However, if you want a calm experience that’s all figured out for you with a capable, competent, and educated tour guide who is a great storyteller… then you need to book your tour with Antoine.
He was very mindful of us, beginning the tour by asking us about ourselves and what we’d be interested in for the tour as far as learning and history go. We personally love all the information we can get about a place, and Antoine did not disappoint.
Not only would he tell us about the historical facts of wherever we passed by (dates and all, very impressive) he would really paint the picture of the world at the time and the people in it. It was stories of love, loss, betrayal, friendship, struggle, family, scandal… truly everything that he shared with us was entertaining, insightful, and relevant in the context of everywhere we went.
As for where we actually went, our tour began by being picked up in our hotel lobby. From there, we traveled to Sintra and up to the Pena Palace garden entrance where we took a beautiful walking path through the palace gardens. Since we had a 9:30am entry ticket, and I guess the garden path in general is lesser known, we basically had the entire grounds to ourselves. It was a beautiful start to the day.
We made it up to the palace and the queues weren’t too bad yet, so we were able to cover it in about an hour with Antoine giving great stories and information about life inside the palace across the different reigns.
Once we finished, we made our way down into Sintra’s historic center where we’re had a lovely lunch in a quiet restaurant that’s tucked away in the area. We then made our way down to a beautiful port wine cave where we tried ginja in a chocolate cup – so delicious and better than getting it from one of the little windows along the street.
We walked over to the national palace and into the outdoor courtyard, where we tried King Carlos’s favorite pastry and quejada with a beautiful view of Sintra, the mountain, and the Moorish Castle.
After this, we jumped back in the van and headed to Monserrate where we had another beautiful walking tour of the gardens leading up to the house. We learned so much about the place that wasn’t even listed on the plaques inside the home, a lot of crazy but cool stories about the people who lived there over the years.
From there, we made our way over to Cabo de Roca where we saw some of the most stunning views. The crazy winds were worth it.
Then we headed to Cascais, where Antoine made 3 special stops he thought we would enjoy. First, at a dune lookout that was stunning. Then along the side of the road so we could see the waves crashing on the rocks up close. And last, at the Boca do Infierno where we saw even more stunning views.
We finished the day in Cascais, which was probably the highlight of the trip. We learned amazing, funny and crazy stories about the history of the town and enjoyed the waterfront views from many different angles. Truly a beautiful day from start to finish.
Also worth mentioning is the mode of transportation – you’re in a comfortable and clean sprinter van which just makes the resting points in between locations all the nicer.
Not only was Antoine providing amazing storytelling, he was attentive to all of our needs. He went out of the way to get us pastries he wanted us to try, water, drinks, checked on us about the walking, making sure we weren’t overly tired. He was trip the perfect tour guide, we had an amazing day and will be talking about this day for the rest of our lives - and that’s truly thanks to him and the level of hospitality he provided. He went above and beyond in every single aspect you can imagine.

Cancel and do not refund - I bought the credit card tour to Sintra. It was cancelled because they didn't add up to enough people. They never refunded my money.
