• Centro Historico de Sintra - Sintra is an ancient, primarily pedestrian village established thousands of years ago. The Greeks called it the “Mountain of the Moon,” and today it remains a true fairy tale village. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. Visitors will have free time for lunch (not included) and to savor the renowned travesseiros (pillows) at a historic bakery dating back to 1862. These are light puff pastries, turned, rolled, and folded seven times, filled with a delightful almond-and-egg-yolk cream, and lightly dusted with sugar. Sintra cheesecakes are also a treat to enjoy.
• Piriquita II - Explore a historic bakery, owned by the same family since 1862, to indulge in the famous travesseiros (pillows), which are light puff pastries, turned, rolled, and folded seven times, filled with a delicious almond-and-egg-yolk cream, and lightly dusted with sugar. Alternatively, try the Sintra cheesecakes, with origins dating back to the 13th century, once used as rent payment.
• Colares - On the way to the Atlantic Ocean, Colares and its renowned wine cellars await. This charming village is celebrated for its wine, a royal passion since the 13th century. The landscape remains timeless, featuring old villas, beautiful mansions, small and large farms, and a century-old tram.
• Cabo da Roca - A stop at the wild Cabo da Roca, a 150-meter (500-foot) cliff marking the westernmost point of continental Europe, offers breathtaking views of the roaring Atlantic and a remote, stunning landscape.
• Farol do Cabo da Roca - The Cabo da Roca lighthouse is one of Portugal’s most iconic lighthouses. While entry is not permitted, the exterior of this beautiful 18th-century structure can be admired.
• Guincho Beach - Guincho Beach is a stunning sandy area located 9 km from Cascais. This protected landscape features dunes and endemic flora and is a popular spot for surfers.
• Museu Condes de Castro - Built between 1897-1900 by Irish nobleman Jorge O’Neill, this summer palace is a classic example of “summer architecture.”
• Palacio Cidadela Cascais - The Citadel of Cascais, constructed between the 15th and 17th centuries, served to defend Cascais and Lisbon. Since the 19th century, it has been a former Royal Palace area.
• Centro Historico de Cascais - Once a fishing village, Cascais became a resort for Portugal’s royal family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it is a popular vacation destination for both Portuguese and international tourists, featuring small museums, picturesque gardens, a vibrant marina, and a pedestrianized old town. A stop here is recommended to try Portugal’s most famous ice cream, Santini’s Gelati!
• Park and National Palace of Pena - The remarkable Pena Palace, a major expression of 19th-century romanticism, will be visited. The current palace dates back to 1839 when King Ferdinand II purchased the ruins of the Monastery of Our Lady of Pena and transformed it into a residence reflecting his romantic taste. The visit includes exploring parts of the Pena Park.
