- Castelo de Palmela - Situated on one of the highest points in the Arrábida region, Palmela Castle offers stunning views over the Setúbal Peninsula. During the Christian Reconquest, it became a key defensive stronghold and was awarded to the Order of Santiago in the 12th century. Portuguese kings later restored and expanded the castle, which served as the headquarters of the Order of Santiago from 1443 until the dissolution of the religious orders in 1834.
- Mercado do Livramento - Opened in 1930, the Livramento Market replaced an older market demolished in 1876. After a significant renovation between 2010 and 2011, it became one of Portugal’s most iconic food markets. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful tile panels by Portuguese artist Pedro Pinto from 1929, depicting the region’s traditional economic activities. Additional tile panels by Rosa Rodrigues, dating from 1944, adorn the northern entrance. In 2014, USA Today recognized Livramento Market as one of the best fish markets in the world.
- Church of the former Monastery of Jesus - The Convent and Church of Jesus are significant milestones in Portuguese architecture, marking the start of the Manueline style. Constructed between 1490 and 1496 under architect Diogo Boitaca, who later worked on landmarks like Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and Batalha Monastery, the church introduced innovative architectural solutions for its time. The Church of Jesus is considered Portugal’s first hall church, designed as a bright and harmonious space, featuring elegant stone vaults, rounded arches, and pioneering structural techniques that influenced Portuguese architecture for centuries.
- Forte de Sao Filipe - The Fort of São Filipe is one of Setúbal’s most iconic landmarks and a must-see attraction. Built in 1583 under the orders of King Philip II of Spain and designed by military engineer Giovanni Vincenzo Casale (known as Captain Fratino), the fortress was constructed to protect Setúbal, the Sado Estuary, and the Portuguese coastline from pirate attacks. Its distinctive six-pointed star-shaped design reflects the military engineering of the period and played an important role in strengthening Portugal’s coastal defenses. Today, beyond its fascinating history, the fort is renowned for offering one of the most spectacular panoramic views over Setúbal, the Sado Bay, and the Arrábida coastline.
- Serra da Arrabida - The Arrábida Natural Park is one of Portugal’s most breathtaking natural treasures, where the crystal-clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean meet the lush green slopes of the Arrábida mountains. Known for its stunning beaches, dramatic viewpoints, and unique landscapes, the region offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Located just 45 km south of Lisbon, the park covers approximately 10,800 hectares across the municipalities of Setúbal, Palmela, and Sesimbra. Its mountain range reaches an altitude of 501 meters and includes several peaks, such as Serra da Arrábida, Serra do Risco, and Serra de São Luís. Today, Arrábida is celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity, pristine coastline, and unforgettable panoramic views, making it one of Portugal’s most beautiful and protected natural areas.
- Portinho da Arrabida - Portinho da Arrábida is one of the most beautiful and iconic beaches in Portugal, nestled at the foot of the Arrábida Mountains within the Arrábida Natural Park. Surrounded by lush green hills and crystal-clear turquoise waters, it offers a truly breathtaking setting. Known for its calm, transparent waters, Portinho is a paradise for nature lovers, swimmers, and snorkeling enthusiasts. The beach is located near the small fishing hamlet of Portinho da Arrábida and is complemented by nearby beaches such as Creiro and Alpertuche. In 2010, Portinho da Arrábida was recognized as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal” in the Beaches category, further cementing its reputation as one of the country’s most extraordinary coastal destinations.
- Baloico Panoramico de Sesimbra - The Sesimbra Panoramic Swing is one of the region’s most scenic viewpoints, offering breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean, Sesimbra Bay, and the surrounding coastline. Perched high above the town, this unique spot provides the perfect opportunity to admire the natural beauty of the Arrábida region while capturing unforgettable photographs. Combining stunning ocean views with a peaceful atmosphere, the panoramic swing has become a popular landmark for visitors seeking one of the most picturesque perspectives in Sesimbra.
- Cabo Espichel - Located on the dramatic cliffs of Cape Espichel, within the Arrábida Natural Park, the Sanctuary of Cape Espichel is one of Portugal’s most remarkable pilgrimage sites. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the impressive Lagosteiros Bay, it offers breathtaking views from one of the most spectacular coastal locations in the country. According to local tradition, the sanctuary was built following an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The present complex was commissioned by Kings Pedro II and João V during the 18th century and includes a church, two long pilgrim hostels, a water house supplied by an aqueduct, and an opera house. Today, the Sanctuary of Cape Espichel combines history, architecture, spirituality, and stunning natural scenery, making it one of the most unique landmarks in the Sesimbra region.
- Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei - The Christ the King Monument (Cristo Rei) is one of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks. Its construction was inspired by a vow made by the Portuguese bishops in 1940 to build a monument dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus if Portugal were spared from the devastation of World War II. As Portugal remained neutral throughout the war, a nationwide fundraising campaign was launched, leading to the inauguration of the monument in 1959. Standing 113 meters high above the Tagus River, Cristo Rei offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over Lisbon, Almada, and the surrounding region. At the base of the monument, within its four pillars symbolizing the four cardinal points, visitors can find the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace, reinforcing the monument’s message of faith, gratitude, and peace.
