SALVATERRA DE MAGOS - Royal Falconry, Churches, and Other Attractions

MISERICÓRDIA CHURCH

Dating back to the 17th century, this church features an impressive tiled ceiling depicting scenes from the life of Our Lady.

MAIN CHURCH (ST. PAUL’S CHURCH)

The Mother Church of Salvaterra de Magos was constructed in the 13th century and was nearly destroyed by the massive earthquakes of the 18th century.

CHAPEL OF THE OLD ROYAL PALACE

A Renaissance temple built by the order of Infant D. Lewis in the 16th century.

ARNEIRO’S FOUNTAIN

Constructed in 1711, this fountain was the sole water source for the entire village.

PIER AND BRIDGE OF THE ROYAL DITCH

This was the location where the Royal Family would arrive by boat from Lisbon for leisure activities such as opera, theater, and falconry.

FALCOARIA REAL OF SALVATERRA DE MAGOS

The Royal Falconry of Salvaterra de Magos, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2016, is dedicated to the art of falconry. It follows strict laws and regulations and is closely linked to the history of the Royal Country House. Visitors can see around 30 species of birds, watch flight and training demonstrations, and observe staged prey captures.
