This tour provides an ideal introduction to the notorious 1755 earthquake, offering a time-travel-like experience that takes participants on a journey through the memories of a city impacted by a devastating natural disaster. This is not virtual reality, but a genuine, intimate experience of a city defined by the events before and after 1755.
During the era of Maritime Discoveries, which began in the early 15th century, the Portuguese capital was the most beautiful city in Europe. However, on November 1, 1755, this cosmopolitan city was struck by a catastrophic earthquake, followed by a tsunami—the first such event to be thoroughly documented in modern European history. The city quickly moved forward, and within a few years, embarked on the monumental task of its own revival, rebuilding the Downtown and surrounding areas from the ground up. This tour explores and contrasts a selection of remarkable Medieval buildings that survived with the grand Rational city that was planned and reconstructed after the disaster.
