We learned so much through food! - Kika was a phenomenal tour guide. It felt like we were spending the night with the unofficial mayor of Lisbon because of how many people she knew and how connected she was with the city. She started us off with a brief history of Portugal and how its colonial past has influenced its present cuisine. She free maps and brought props to explain where specific spices came from and the types of dishes they are used in today. I learned so much about architecture and food in relation to major Portuguese historical moments. It was especially fun to learn about the root influence of vindaloo dishes and how to spot authentic Portuguese restaurants. Aside from the planned tour, I had a stomach ache and Kika was so kind and gracious. She took me to a pharmacy and helped translate while I was able to seek some care. Really can’t give enough praise to her and the experience we had. It was the best!

Excellent experience - Our tour guide, Kika, was a former educator, and boy did it show. She catered to all types of learners, with maps, photos, drawings and props. She also did an excellent job weaving together the history, the culture and the food of Lisbon. We tasted a wide variety of food, and the places she chose allowed us to gain much more insight into culinary and social life in Lisbon. I was sorry when our four hour tour was over.

Incredible Experience, We Highly Recommend - Can’t recommend enough!! Kika was an incredible guide, so knowledgeable and kind. Our family had a great experience and learned so much about the city, its food scene, and the country’s history. Speaking of, the food was absolutely delicious! Plus, my daughter is vegetarian and was easily accommodated!

Epic food tour through Lisbon - Amazing food tour through a quiet neighborhood. The guide was tremendous and really brought the city, the country’s history, the food and the local culture together. She was like a history teacher, and I learned quite a bit. I have been on a lot of tours by Culinary Backstreets. They are all so meticulously planned and carried out, and the guides are always top notch. This tour had a lot of food, so make sure to come hungry.

Fabulous Food and Cultural Introduction - Laura was a wonderful guide and really brought the tour alive with her knowledge and passion for sharing food and information. The food was delicious but more importantly was its connection to local culture.

Excellent tour guide and great food - I joined the tour on 30th October, Kika was my tour guide. I have to say she is one of the best tour guide I ever met. She is knowledgeable, responsibility and I can see she put a lot of effort preparing for the tour. For example, instead of just explaination, she used drawing and spices to show the history of Portugal, I have better understanding and getting more interest about the history of this country. The approach she took to explain things is very interesting. She also patient enough to answer my questions and always try to explain the background for easier understanding. Everything went smoothly, we listen to her explanation(drawing sometimes), tasting good foods and wines, have good coffee, the tour was a lot of fun and I would highly recommended Kika.

Excellent history lesson - Excellent guide. The guy to which we were assigned and provided photos of was not the guy that showed up. There was no communication that changes for being made. Ignus was fabulous and a walking history book. The pouring rainy weather unfortunately shortened our tour but overall it was great!
