• Monument to the Restorers - This square is distinguished by its towering obelisk, standing 30 meters tall, known as the “Monumento dos Restauradores.” It was unveiled on April 28, 1886, to commemorate the country’s liberation from Spanish rule on December 1, 1640. The bronze figures on the pedestal symbolize victory, with a palm and a crown, and Liberty.
• Avenida da Liberdade - Avenida da Liberdade is one of Lisbon’s main avenues, linking Restauradores Square to Marquês de Pombal Square.
• Estatua do Marques de Pombal - Marquês de Pombal, born in 1699, was instrumental in significant architectural transformations in Lisbon.
• Rossio Square - Rossio Square is one of Lisbon’s oldest and most beautiful squares. For over six centuries, it has been the backdrop for numerous significant events in Lisbon’s history.
• Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco) - Praça do Comércio, also known as “Terreiro do Paço,” is one of Europe’s largest squares, covering approximately 36,000 m2 (180m x 200m).
• Relogio do Cais do Sodre - The names “Cais do Sodré” and “Praça dos Remolares” were commonly used for a long time before the Duke of Terceira’s statue was erected in 1877. Known as “remolares” because it was once a place for oar carpenters, referred to as tugboats. In 1906, the “Regulador” clock was constructed, which for many years marked Lisbon’s official time.
• Time Out Market Lisboa - Lisbon has always been a city of merchants. On the streets, a variety of goods could be purchased from street vendors. With the discoveries in the sixteenth century and the rise of merchants, there was a need to reorganize the city and designate specific areas for merchants. Thus, the “Ribeira Velha” Market was established, located in front of the “Casa dos Bicos.”
• Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei - The statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, inspired the Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon, Mons. Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira, during a 1934 visit to that city, to construct a similar monument in Lisbon.
• 25 de Abril Bridge - The “25 de Abril” Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Tagus River “Rio Tejo,” connecting Lisbon (north bank) to Almada (south bank). The bridge spans the Tagus River “Rio Tejo” at its narrowest point, the “Tejo” bottleneck. The bridge’s design is similar to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (USA) and was structurally advanced for its time, with calculations made to later accommodate the train that now exists.
• Cordoaria Nacional - The National Factory of “Cordoaria” or “Cordoaria Nacional” was a manufacturing establishment of the Portuguese Navy. The “Cordoaria” produced cables, sisal ropes, sails, and flags for Portuguese ships. The building, constructed in 1771, is now a national monument.
• MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology - The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) is a contemporary art museum in Lisbon. This project was designed to emphasize the river-facing facade, blending the rear portion with the urban environment. It is one of the most significant architectural works in recent years along the city’s riverside.
• MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology - Originally known as the “Tejo Central,” it was built between 1908 and 1951, undergoing several expansion phases. Its structure follows the western iron architecture style with bricklaying, featuring artistic styles ranging from new art to classicism.
• Palacio de Belem - In 1912, after the proclamation of the republic, the Palace of Belém was designated as the official residence of the President of the Republic. However, the presidents of the First Republic had to pay rent to the State to reside in the Palace, to avoid accusations of enjoying privileges attributed to the previous regime.
• Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - The Monastery is a cultural landmark that has captivated artists, chroniclers, and travelers throughout its five centuries of existence. It served as a reception and burial site for kings and later poets.
• Centro Cultural de Belem - CCB - Its final project was decided in early 1988. After hosting the presidency of the European Union, it was transformed into a cultural and conference center in 1993, focusing on music, theatrical arts, and photography.
• Torre de Belem - The Tower of Belém, officially Torre de São Vicente, is located where Belém beach once existed and was originally surrounded by water. Over the centuries, it became surrounded by the beach until it was incorporated into the mainland.
• Padrao dos Descobrimentos - The monument was constructed for the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940. Designed by Cottinelli Telmo, it serves as a tribute to Infante D. Henrique, becoming the Monument of the Discoveries, honoring not only the Infante but also his collaborators and followers.
