- Fortaleza de Sagres - Known as the City of Navigators!
Sagres, or the Promontorium Sacrum, is a place that brings to mind the legacy of Infante D. Henrique and the era of Portuguese discoveries.
Located at the southwesternmost point of the European continent, this area was historically referred to as the Promontorium Sacrum, stretching from Ponta da Piedade to Cape São Vicente and from the cape to Arrifana beach. A fortified structure was erected in the 15th century by Infante D. Henrique, who passed away here in 1460. This fortress gave Sagres a significant role in Portugal’s history, embedding it in the narrative of Portuguese exploration and earning it international acclaim.
Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea and Cape São Vicente, and explore structures like the cistern tower, windbreak wall, former residences, barracks, and the old parish church of Nossa Senhora da Graça. A notable feature is the large compass rose on the ground, measuring 43 meters in diameter. The site’s strategic coastal position has a rich history, including an attack by the corsair Francis Drake in 1587, during the period when Portugal was under the rule of King Filipe III of Spain.
In the 1990s, the site underwent architectural enhancements by João Carreira, an architect from Oporto, resulting in the addition of a Temporary Exhibitions area, Multimedia Centre, shops, and a cafeteria.
- Cape Saint Vincent - Featuring Cape S. Vicente and its lighthouse
The fortress is part of a defensive system built to protect the Algarve coastline. This location was used by Prince Henry the Navigator as a retreat.
Cabo de São Vicente is a cape situated at the southwestern tip of mainland Portugal, in the parish of Sagres, municipality of Vila do Bispo. It lies 4 km west and 3 km north of Ponta de Sagres, the ancient Roman “Promontorium Sacrum,” dedicated to the god Saturn, and hosts an ancient, visitable fortress.
- Praia de Benagil - Benagil Beach, with its fishing boats almost concealing its small sandy area, is located along one of the most beautiful stretches of the Algarve coastline, characterized by its truncated cliffs and spurs forming grottoes and caverns.
With its tranquil sea, this area is perfect for boat trips to secluded beaches, inaccessible by land, where the serenity is so profound it is hard to comprehend.
- Algar de Benagil - The Benagil algar is one of the world’s most renowned ocean caves, drawing millions of tourists annually and serving as the Algarve’s main attraction in Portugal.
From boating to kayaking to Benagil, there are numerous options to choose from!
The Benagil algar is one of the largest natural attractions in southern Portugal’s Algarve region, known as a summer paradise. With stunning beaches, top-notch golf courses, and excellent restaurants, the Algarve is the premier European vacation destination.
Featured in various international publications like the Huffington Post, which ranked this attraction among the world’s five most beautiful places, Benagil’s caves are immensely popular. The Benagil algar is located in a small, traditional fishing village called Benagil, adjacent to Benagil Beach, in the municipality of Lagos, right in the heart of the Algarve.
There are numerous ways to reach Benagil Cave, catering to individual preferences. Options include taking a boat, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), or even swimming! However, swimming can be challenging without good fitness, and it’s not recommended during peak summer due to heavy boat traffic at the cave entrances.
Boat trips to the Benagil algar offer a comfortable way to visit. Choices range from full-day barbecue tours to 2-hour excursions.
