Vicentine Coast (Short sightseeing stops) - Sagres - Lagos (Customized) - Overnight Albufeira
Vila Nova de Milfontes - International travelers are gradually discovering the charm of Vila Nova de Milfontes and the western Alentejo region, yet it remains one of Portugal’s least explored coastlines, featuring expansive stretches of untouched and deserted beaches. The town of Vila Nova de Milfontes is quintessentially Portuguese, with its cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and picturesque views across the Mira River.
Cape Saint Vincent - As the most south-westerly point in mainland Europe, this rugged and imposing Cape has long been regarded as sacred ground. The ancient Greeks referred to it as the ‘Land of Serpents,’ while the Romans, curiously, opted for a gentler name: Promontorium Sacrum (‘Holy Promontory’), which is the Latin root of the name ‘Sagres’ (from Sacrum). For the Romans, who preferred solid ground, Cape St. Vincent was the ‘Edge of the World,’ a mystical vortex where the setting sun dramatically vanished into the vast, unknown ocean. Even today, the setting sun sometimes appears larger and brighter at Cape St. Vincent. This myth persisted through the Middle Ages until Prince Henry the Navigator decided to dispel such notions, thereby ending the Age of Darkness.
Ponta da Piedade - The cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland are among the most stunning natural features of the Algarve. This striking limestone coastline is composed of sea pillars, delicate rock arches, and hidden grottos, all sculpted by fierce winter storms.
Lagos - Lagos is a historic and charming city located on the beautiful Western Algarve. It boasts a rich maritime heritage and a coastline of breathtaking natural beauty, making it one of the Algarve’s premier holiday destinations.
Fortunately, Lagos has not fallen victim to mass tourism, and the city retains its unique character and charm. Within the historic center lies a proud Portuguese city, with cobbled streets, authentic restaurants, and a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Faro - Tavira (customized)
Faro - Faro, the administrative capital of the Algarve, is abundant in natural and cultural heritage and invites exploration.
The pre-Roman city known as Ossónoba was one of the most significant urban centers in the southern Iberian Peninsula. Today, due to its strategic location and status as the capital, Faro hosts the most important infrastructure and public services in the Algarve region.
The local cuisine, centered around shellfish from the Ria Formosa, is distinctive and among the finest in the country.
Faro’s enchanting historic center is encircled by ancient city walls and features a Gothic cathedral. Beyond the city walls lies a modern center with pedestrian shopping streets, scenic squares, and a variety of restaurants and bars.
South of Faro is the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a series of saltwater lagoons and mudflats that serve as a sanctuary for migratory birds and wildlife. Along the seaside of the Ria Formosa are three sandbar islands, home to Faro’s pristine beaches.
Tavira - Tavira is one of the most enchanting towns in the Algarve.
Tavira is situated along the gentle flow of the Gilão River and is a delightful blend of traditional Portuguese heritage with deep-rooted Moorish influences. Hidden within the maze of cobbled streets are traditionally tiled houses, family-run restaurants, and numerous decorative churches.
South of Tavira are the protected waterways and mudflats of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, leading to the stunning sandy beaches of the Ilha de Tavira.
Tavira is a favorite holiday destination in the Algarve, and visitors are sure to be captivated by its charm.
Silves - Carvoeiro (Customized)
Silves - Discover the Culture & History of Silves, the Islamic capital of the Algarve, renowned in the 11th century for its development and prosperity. It was a cultural hub where the region’s most brilliant poets, chroniclers, and jurists resided. Due to its significance, Silves was the first Algarve city to be captured by the Christians in 1189, led by King Sancho I.
Overlooking the town below, Silves Castle is considered the best-preserved Moorish castle in Portugal.
Carvoeiro - Once a typical Algarve fishing village nestled in a valley and flanked by high limestone cliffs, Carvoeiro has evolved into a popular, ever-expanding resort town. Despite this growth, the beach remains the focal point of the town, and the area retains much of its charm.
Whitewashed, terracotta-tiled villas and cottages cling to the cliff sides, forming a kind of amphitheater with all eyes on Carvoeiro’s main attraction - the beach.
Évora (Customized)
Evora - With over two thousand years of history and a variety of cultural and architectural influences, Évora is a true national treasure and rightly holds its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Temple of Diana: The Corinthian-like imperial temple, with its twelve granite columns, is believed to have been dedicated to Diana, the Goddess of the hunt.
The 12th-century Roman-Gothic cathedral is the largest in Portugal and houses the Sacred Art Museum.
Chapel of Bones: Beyond the beauty of the cathedral lies another significant church that houses something quite unique. The Manueline-Gothic church of Sao Francisco features a chapel adorned entirely with human bones from approximately 5,000 people, collected in the 17th century from graveyards by monks who intended to convey the message of life’s transitory nature. Above the entrance to the Capela dos Ossos, notice the inscription that roughly translates to “We the bones that are here, for yours await.”
