Alfama - Spend a day exploring Lisbon, a city that was nearly destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, the largest ever recorded in Europe. This disaster led to the creation of a new city with the first anti-seismic buildings, featuring a grid of straight, perpendicular streets centered around Rua Augusta. These streets were named after various trades and artisans of the time, such as cobblers and goldsmiths.
Cidade Baixa - Known for the grandeur of its buildings, “Baixa de Lisboa” represents a new social order that values the merchant and financial classes. To test the earthquake resilience of these buildings, troops marched inside them.
Torre de Belem - In Belem, you’ll find monuments that celebrate the Portuguese Discoveries, including the Jerónimos Monastery and Torre de Belém, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Modern landmarks like the Monument of the Discoveries and the Plaza do Imperio add to the area’s historical significance. Wander through these elements that narrate the story of Portugal’s grand past.
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - Located by the Tagus River, this area offers green spaces, marinas, sailing clubs, and a cycle path where you can enjoy the sea air and scenic views. Don’t miss the famous Pastels of Bethlehem, a secret recipe that brings joy to all who taste it.
Lisbon - Sintra - Cascais - Estoril - Lisbon
Centro Historico de Sintra - On the second day of our seven-day private tour in Portugal, we’ll visit Sintra, a paradise for Portuguese aristocracy. Explore the charming narrow alleys and local shops, and don’t miss the Piriquita pastry shop, known for its “Queijadas de Sintra” and “Travesseiros de Sintra.”
Park and National Palace of Pena - Choose which palace to visit based on your interests. Options include “Quinta da Regaleira,” a 19th-century palace rich in Masonic symbolism, the Moorish Castle, a testament to the Islamic presence in the region, or the fantastical Palaçio da Pena, a revivalist reconstruction inspired by 19th-century romanticism.
Farol do cabo da Roca - Known as “The Snout of the Rock” or the poetic “Promontory of the Moon,” Cabo da Roca is a stunning geological formation. Mentioned by the poet Camoes in “Os Lusíadas” as the place “where the Earth ends and the sea begins,” it is part of the Natural Park of Sintra-Cascais. From here, you can follow ecological trails through the Serra de Sintra.
Cascais Marina - Explore Cascais, an ancient fishing village turned into a beautiful and cosmopolitan beach resort, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Casino Estoril - Nearby is Estoril, famous for its casino, the largest in Europe, and for being the place where Ian Fleming wrote the first James Bond novel, “Casino Royale,” during World War II. We’ll return to Lisbon along the scenic coastal road “Marginal.”
Lisbon - Fatima - Coimbra - Oporto
Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima - On the third day of our five-day private tour in Portugal, we’ll leave Lisbon and first visit Fatima. Here, you can attend a mass (optional) at the Chapel of the Apparitions, the first chapel built after the apparitions, located at the center of the Sanctuary.
Basilica of the Holy Trinity - The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in 1928 in Neo-Baroque style, houses the tombs of the children and Sister Lucia, who passed away in 2005. The Basilica of Santissima Trindade, built in 2007, is a modern church designed by Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis, with over 8,000 seats and a 40,000 m² area.
University of Coimbra - Next, we’ll visit Coimbra, starting with its University, the oldest in Europe. Highlights include the Joanine Library, one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, and other interesting sites like Saint Michel Chapel, “sala dos Capelos,” and the “cabra” tower.
Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) - Explore Coimbra’s downtown, situated between the Mondego River and the University. This charming area is filled with narrow streets, beautiful alleys, cafes, pastry shops, and restaurants. Rich in culture and gastronomy, it has been the city’s commercial center for centuries.
