- Hunt Museum - The Hunt Museum is a true treasure trove of wonders. It boasts a diverse and captivating collection of antiquities alongside fine and decorative art, all housed in one of Limerick’s iconic landmarks, The Custom House.
This museum holds one of Ireland’s most remarkable private collections, featuring items from the Neolithic Period to the 20th century. The artefacts on display originate from Greece, Rome, Egypt, and the Olmec civilizations, with a significant collection of Irish prehistoric archaeological material ranging from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age. Visitors can admire an impressive Bronze Age shield and cauldron, as well as a set of substantial monastic bells from the early Christian period, not to mention the renowned 9th-century Antrim Cross.
A highlight of the collection is the Irish and European medieval material, which includes statues in stone and wood, painted panels, jewelry, enamels, ivories, ceramics, crystal, and crucifixes. The 18th and 19th-century decorative arts are well-represented with exquisite examples of silver, glass, and ceramics. The collection features works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Roderic O’Conor, Jack B. Yeats, Robert Fagan, and Henry Moore.
The collection reflects the tastes and interests of its founders, John and Gertrude Hunt. The Hunts established a successful business supplying museums and collectors, while also retaining pieces that mirrored their own interests and curiosity, which they generously donated to the people of Ireland.
For those interested in Irish Contemporary Ceramics, there is an outstanding collection featuring works by Frances Lambe, Henry Pim, and Christy Keeney, among others.
The museum also hosts paid temporary exhibitions, such as the current “Lavery & Osborne: Observing Life.” This exhibition showcases two Irish 19th-century artists influenced by plein air and naturalist movements, capturing the great and the good from Hazel Lavery to Queen Victoria, as well as beautiful genre scenes.
