Caral was at least 1,800 years ahead of those in Mesoamerica, where another of the six globally recognized centers of civilization was located.

The Sacred City of Caral is situated at the beginning of the middle valley of the Supe River, north of Lima, at kilometer 184 of the Pan-American Highway.

Peñico was constructed at 600 meters above sea level on a ridge parallel to the river and a large alluvial fan. It is encircled by the Supe Valley and mountains over 1,000 meters high. The complex spans 22.05 hectares and is divided into two sections: one on a ridge, featuring buildings from various eras, with a sequence of pyramids and terraces associated with a sunken circular plaza.

Among the monumental structures in the center, one known as “B2” is prominent: research suggests this was the most significant in Peñico, where key administrative and ideological activities occurred. This is indicated by the presence of reliefs and designs of pututus, a musical instrument used in Andean societies to gather people or announce events.
