Liberia’s Rainy Weekend: Cultural Delights and Cozy Indoor Adventures Await

Discover the cozy charm of Liberia, Costa Rica, as you embrace the rain with cultural and culinary adventures. From coffee and chocolate tours to river cruises amidst vibrant wildlife, this weekend promises a deep connection with the local heritage.

Embracing the Rain: A Cultural Journey in Liberia

As the rain gently taps on the rooftops of Liberia, Guanacaste Province, it creates a symphony that invites travelers to explore the rich cultural tapestry of this Costa Rican gem. The weekend of May 17th and 18th, 2025, promises a cozy embrace of indoor adventures and cultural delights, perfect for those seeking a deeper connection with the local heritage.

Begin your journey with the Coffee and Chocolate Experience, available on the morning of May 17th from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM. This immersive experience at Cafe Tio Leo offers a historical overview of coffee and chocolate, complete with field walks, sampling, and roasting. As you sip on freshly brewed coffee and taste the rich flavors of chocolate, you’ll feel like part of the family, learning the stories and traditions that have shaped this region. The experience also includes a cooking class where you can make and taste empanadas, and a sugarcane experience that delves into the history and process of sugarcane production.

“Really recommend doing this experience - We (4 girls) just went on the tour today. The most fantastic experience. So much included and you learn a lot. The staff is amazing and very sweet. We had coffee (good even for people who don’t like it normally), sugar cane juice, empanadas you make yourself, cacao (you can be part of the process) and much more. Really recommend doing it. Worth every penny.” - Reviewed on March 20, 2025

A River Adventure Amidst the Rain

As the afternoon rain sets in, consider the Palo Verde River Cruise, available on both days from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. This tour offers a serene riverboat cruise along the Tempisque River, where you can witness the vibrant wildlife of Palo Verde National Park. From exotic birds to playful monkeys and formidable crocodiles, the cruise provides a unique opportunity to observe these creatures in their natural habitat.

The tour also includes a visit to Hacienda El Viejo Wetlands, where you can immerse yourself in the sweetness of sugarcane and learn about the traditional “ox-operated sugar mill.” Enjoy handmade tortillas, fresh coffee, and Guanacastecan appetizers, all while meeting locals eager to share their stories. The experience is enriched by the chance to create your own rum-infused bottle using a variety of fruits and spices.

“Action packed day! - What an amazing day! Eddie was the best tour guide and went out of his way to make our day extra special. We saw so many crocodiles and monkeys in the river boat cruise then had a delicious homemade Costa Rican lunch. Rum tour was very educational and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to learn about Costa Rican culture.” - Reviewed on September 16, 2023

Cultural Immersion and Culinary Delights

As the rain continues to fall, embrace the warmth of Costa Rican hospitality with a visit to Rancho Los Coyotes, included in the Palo Verde River Cruise. Here, skilled women prepare traditional Costa Rican cuisine on a wood stove, imparting authentic flavors to your meal. Learn about the past lives of the sabaneros (cowboys) and their families, and witness a Chorotega Indian Artist demonstrate the ancient art of pottery making.

This weekend in Liberia offers a chance to slow down and savor the cultural richness of Guanacaste Province. Whether you’re exploring the lush landscapes of Palo Verde or indulging in the flavors of coffee and chocolate, the rain only adds to the charm of this cozy getaway. Let the rhythm of the rain guide you through a journey of discovery and connection, where every experience is a story waiting to be told.
