From Surf to Springs: A Costa Rican Adventure
When the waves take a backseat, and the call of the rainforest beckons, you know it’s time for a new adventure. Join me as I trade my surfboard for hiking boots and explore the wonders of Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs.
A Journey to the Heart of Costa Rica
The day began with the sun peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the waves that I’ve come to know so well. My wife and I were staying at the Occidental, a cozy spot that felt like a home away from home. We were picked up by a shuttle that whisked us away to meet the rest of our group. The anticipation was palpable as we embarked on a 2-2.5 hour journey to Café Macadamia, nestled by the serene Arenal Lake.
As a surfer, I’m always chasing the perfect wave, but today, it was all about chasing new experiences. The breakfast at Café Macadamia was a feast for the senses. The food was incredible, and the views of the Arenal Volcano were nothing short of breathtaking. It was a moment of pure bliss, sipping on rich Costa Rican coffee while soaking in the majestic landscape.
Into the Heart of the Rainforest
After our delightful breakfast, we headed to the rainforest, a place teeming with life and vibrant energy. Our guide, Jose, was a fountain of knowledge, pointing out the intricate details of the flora and fauna that make this ecosystem so unique. The 1.5-hour hike was a journey through a living tapestry of green, with the sounds of the forest creating a symphony that resonated with my soul.
As someone who spends most of his time by the ocean, the rainforest was a refreshing change of pace. The hanging bridges offered a different perspective, allowing us to see the forest from above. It was a reminder of the diverse beauty that Costa Rica has to offer, beyond its stunning coastlines.
Soaking in the Volcanic Bliss
Our final destination was the Titoku Hot Springs, a place where relaxation takes on a whole new meaning. After a delicious buffet lunch, we changed into our swimwear and slipped into the warm embrace of the mineral-rich waters. The hot springs, heated by the Arenal Volcano, offered a range of temperatures, each pool a different level of soothing warmth.
Floating in the hot springs, I felt the tension melt away, replaced by a profound sense of peace. It was a perfect way to end the day, surrounded by the lush greenery and the distant rumble of the volcano. As the sun began to set, we reluctantly left the springs, knowing we had a long journey back.
The ride back was a chance to reflect on the day’s adventures. The traffic was heavy, but it didn’t matter. The memories of the rainforest, the volcano, and the hot springs lingered, a reminder of the incredible experiences that await in this beautiful country. Costa Rica never ceases to amaze me, and I can’t wait to see what other adventures lie ahead.
