Chasing Waterfalls: A Surfer’s Hike Through Costa Rica’s Hidden Gems
Trading my surfboard for hiking boots, I ventured to Costa Rica’s Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. Join me as I explore hidden waterfalls, lush trails, and savor local flavors in this unforgettable adventure.
A Journey to the Heart of Costa Rica
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing the perfect wave along the sun-drenched coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I trade my surfboard for hiking boots and venture inland to explore the lush, vibrant landscapes that make this region so unique. My latest adventure took me to the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano in Costa Rica, a place renowned for its breathtaking waterfalls and rich biodiversity.
The day began with a drive from Liberia, winding through the quaint villages of Colorado and Curubande. The early morning sun cast a golden glow over the landscape, and the air was filled with the promise of adventure. We made a quick stop at a local “soda” to savor some Costa Rican coffee, bread, and fresh fruits—a perfect start to fuel our journey.
Our first destination was the Oropendola Waterfall, a hidden gem nestled at the slopes of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. The trail leading to the waterfall was a short but invigorating hike, and as we approached, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation. The Oropendola Waterfall spills an impressive 82 feet into a turquoise pool, surrounded by lush greenery. Taking a refreshing dip in the cool waters was a rejuvenating experience, a moment of pure bliss in the heart of nature.
The Hidden Beauty of La Leona
After soaking in the beauty of Oropendola, we continued our journey to the La Leona Waterfall. This part of the hike was more challenging, with a 1.7-mile single-track trail that tested our endurance. The path took us through caves and required some climbing, adding an element of adventure to the trek.
Reaching La Leona was like discovering a secret paradise. The waterfall is tucked away on the outskirts of the volcano, and to reach it, we had to swim 25 meters through a crystal-clear pool. The effort was well worth it, as the sight of the waterfall cascading into the serene pool was nothing short of magical. It was a reminder of the hidden wonders that await those willing to venture off the beaten path.
A Taste of Local Culture
Our adventure didn’t end with the waterfalls. We made our way back to Curubande, where the Blanco and Colorado rivers converge, forming stunning turquoise pools. The scenery was breathtaking, a testament to the natural beauty that Costa Rica has to offer.
In Curubande, we indulged in a typical Costa Rican lunch, a delightful way to conclude our journey. The flavors of the local cuisine, combined with the warmth of the people, made for an unforgettable experience. As I sat there, savoring each bite, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures and the incredible landscapes we had explored.
This hike was a reminder of the diverse beauty that lies beyond the waves. While the ocean will always be my first love, the mountains and waterfalls of Costa Rica have a special place in my heart. If you ever find yourself in Liberia, I highly recommend embarking on the Rincon Waterfall Hike to discover the breathtaking nature that awaits.
