- Aksla Mountain - Stop 1: A 5 km drive taking 15 minutes. Enjoy a view of Ålesund from the mountain. Restroom available. A short 50-meter walk to the viewpoint.
Surrounded by the sea and mountains, Ålesund is beautifully situated. This is a real-life adventure journey. Even for Norwegians, this experience is unique.
Enjoy a panoramic view of stunning Ålesund. Experience a full 360-degree view of the surrounding fjords and islands. In 2013, National Geographic voted Ålesund as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, a must-see. The weather here changes quickly, adding a fascinating, almost magical touch. The stairs from the city, built in 1885 and opened in 1900, consist of 418 steps. They were renovated in 2014 to resemble the original design as closely as possible.
After a 10-minute drive, a drone video of Ålesund and Trollstigen is shown on the bus, lasting 25 minutes.
- Sjoholt - Stop 2: A 40 km drive taking 45 minutes. No walking required to view the site. Observe the old hotel from the bus window and listen to its intriguing history. (Sjøholt). Guided tour of the old hotel. (Remain seated on the bus.) Driving time is 45 minutes.
The Sjøholt Hotel first opened in 1887. This Swiss-style hotel, with its impressive facade and glass verandas, is a well-known landmark along the main road between Vestnes and Ålesund.
The hotel, a Swiss-style building with three and a half floors, is protected by the National Antiquities.
In the past, European royals and famous individuals stayed here when travel times were longer.
- Stordal - Stop 3: A 9 km drive taking 15 minutes. Kopparsteinen. A 10-meter walk to the viewpoint.
Kokarsteinen by Storfjorden between Vaksvik and Dyrkorn served as a shelter and cooking area for road builders. Only a small part is preserved. Enjoy a fantastic view of the fjord. Across the fjord lies the beautiful mountain farm Yste Skotet.
In the steep fjord landscape on the west side of Storfjord, Ytste Skotet is beautifully situated 225 meters above the fjord and has been inhabited since the Viking Age. Traditional farming methods, with grain on the infield and grazing and mowing on the outfield, continued until 1954 when the last residents left. Binoculars are recommended for this trip.
- Liabygda Church - Stop 4: A 23 km drive taking 30 minutes. Located by the road with the fjord crossing to Geiranger.
Here, the fjord splits in two, with one branch leading into Tafjord, known for several winter heat records in Norway, and the other into Geiranger, a route followed by cruise ships.
The fjord is as deep as the mountains are high. This is a magical, spectacular, and fascinating sight to behold.
- Gudbrandsjuvet - Stop 5: A 27 km drive taking 30 minutes. A 50-meter walk to the viewpoint. Restroom available.
Here, large waterfalls naturally converge, creating a magical experience as you walk on bridges crisscrossing the waterfalls. Nature’s performance and the immense power of water from untouched nature over thousands of years create an unforgettable experience. Capture photos here, as this is a unique experience, even in Norway.
The water flows between gorges and cracks in the mountain, meeting from unexpected angles before flowing under the bridge and plunging further down the valley.
The gully is partly formed by several large potholes. The water display is a tourist attraction, with platforms and bridges made of glass and rust-corroded iron, showcasing magical engineering of the highest class.
Lunch box provided after the stop.
- Øvstestølen - Stop 6: A 2 km drive taking 15 minutes. An old farm with one house 500 years old. A 40-meter walk to the viewpoint.
Øvstestølen in Valldal, Norddal municipality, is about 500 meters above sea level. Here, you can closely observe the old mountain farm and the river with a charming stone bridge. High up, the trees are shorter. In the background, part of the farm settlement and the steep Bjorstadfjellet mountain are visible. Øvstestølen was fully utilized. In 1939, 50-60 dairy cows were typically here in the summer. Young cattle, bulls, and horses also used the mountain pastures. When the Trollstigen road was built, Øvstestølen’s houses accommodated road workers.
- Trollstigen - Stop 7: A 13 km drive taking 15 minutes. 863 meters above sea level. This is the highest point on the route. AMAZING views from the top of the mountains. A 10-meter walk to the viewpoint.
No trees grow here.
The air is incredibly clean, and the view of the spectacular landscape is breathtaking, resembling a lunar landscape. Allow yourself to be captivated. Winters are long, and summers are short here.
- Trollstigen - Stop 8: A 10-minute drive covering 3 km.
Trollstigen is one of Norway’s most visited tourist attractions. A 50-200 meter walk to the viewpoint. Souvenir shop and restroom available.
The road was inaugurated by King Haakon VII on July 31, 1936. This is where nature’s most spectacular scenery can be experienced. The impressions are numerous, and the engineering work with bridges and walkways makes the view down the valley and over the waterfall magical and unforgettable.
Here, one feels small compared to the immense nature, with thousand-meter-high mountains and waterfalls that take your breath away.
The eleven hairpin bends each have a radius of approximately 10 meters. A bridge lies under the 180-meter-high Stigfossen, and when the water flow is high, it splashes over the bridge.
Since 1992, Trollstigen has been part of the tourism product The Golden Route.
- Trollstigen - Stop 9: A 20-minute drive covering 4 km to the bottom of Trollstigen. A 10-meter walk to the viewpoint.
Here, the scale of the landscape is truly felt. The massive waterfall and the beautiful stone bridge, reminiscent of a fairy tale, create a magical and almost unreal experience. The beauty leaves a lasting impression.
The mountains are very high, and their colors change with the sun and shadows. Remember to take care.
- Trollstigen - Stop 10: A 10-minute drive covering 5 km.
Trollstigen Gjestegård. Here, meet the big trolls. They are kind, with different expressions, yet still a bit intimidatingly large and beautiful. This is a perfect photo opportunity. The guest house has a souvenir shop.
Troll ice cream is available here. Show your Royal Tour Travel ID card to receive it, included in the tour. Enjoy Norwegian Troll ice cream at its finest.
