- Leshan Giant Buddha (Da Fo) - Begin your day with a meet-up at the lobby of your Chengdu Downtown hotel in the morning. You will be warmly greeted by your knowledgeable and friendly personal guide, then travel in an air-conditioned vehicle to the Leshan Giant Buddha (approximately 2.5 hours). Relax during the journey and enjoy the beautiful countryside scenery.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the construction of the Leshan Buddha began in 713 during the Tang Dynasty and was completed in 803, taking over 90 years to carve. Thousands of workers dedicated their efforts and wisdom to this project. As the largest carved stone Buddha in the world, the Giant Buddha is celebrated in poetry, song, and story.
Follow your tour guide to explore the entire area, where you will view the Buddha from various perspectives.
- Lingyun Temple - Your first stop is Lingyun Temple, located behind the Grand Buddha’s head. Marvel at the intricate construction of the Buddha’s coiled hair, composed of approximately 1,020 twisted buns. Walk inside to admire the detailed sculptures and wall designs of the temple. Then, enjoy panoramic views of the three rivers converging beautifully below.
Next, follow your guide on a 30-minute walk down the left side of the Grand Buddha. Upon reaching the bottom, be amazed by the 233-foot (71-meter) height of the world’s largest carved Buddha and capture stunning photographs of this sacred site.
- Wuyou Temple - Next, explore the right side of the Buddha to discover Wuyou Temple, which houses numerous terra-cotta sculptures and calligraphic paintings.
Stroll around the temple with your tour guide to learn more about Buddhism.
If the line to Wuyou Temple is too long, you will take a river cruise for a panoramic view of the Giant Buddha instead.
Afterwards, return to Chengdu City.
- Wenshu Yuan Monastery - Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, where your tour guide will introduce several landmarks, shopping areas, and activities in Chengdu City. Discuss with your guide to decide the places you wish to visit.
Typically, you will visit Wenshu Yuan Monastery.
Wenshu Yuan Monastery is the best-preserved Buddhist temple in the city, featuring hundreds of bronze, wooden, and stone statues, as well as Buddhist relics. Since the Tang (618-907) dynasties, over 500 pieces of painting and calligraphy by celebrities have been stored here.
Stroll around the courtyard with your tour guide to learn about Buddhism in China, observe how locals pray with incense, admire various cultural relics, and explore its exquisite garden and solemn halls.
- Wuhou Memorial Temple - Then, proceed to the Wuhou Memorial Temple, built in the 6th century in memory of Emperor Liu Bei and Prime Minister Zhuge Liang of the Shu Kingdom.
Follow your tour guide to explore important buildings, including the Temple of Liu Bei, the Temple of Zhuge Liang, Sanyi Temple, and the Tomb of Liu Bei.
Learn about the histories and stories behind these sites.
- Kuanzhai Alley - Continue your visit to Kuanzhai Alley, a popular entertainment and nightlife district with traditional Chinese-style buildings.
Follow your tour guide to explore the area and learn about Chengdu’s folk culture and local life. Then, visit Well Alley, which showcases the new life of Chengdu residents, as well as the most open, diverse, and dynamic zone in the area.
You can choose to end your tour here and explore the area independently, or your tour guide will take you back to your hotel in Chengdu City to conclude the tour.
