- Centro storico di Galatina - The journey from Lecce to Galatina takes about 30 minutes. Upon arrival, there will be a stop near the main square, allowing for an independent exploration of the Baroque church of “San Pietro.” Nearby, the small chapel of “San Paolo” features a well that, according to tradition, could heal those bitten by the poisonous tarantula spider. This is why the town is famous for the mystical and esoteric ceremonies of “Tarantismo,” which inspired the local folk dance “Pizzica.” Galatina is also celebrated for its delectable pastries, crafted for generations in local pasticcerie. At the most renowned one, visitors can indulge in the famous “Pasticciotto.”
- Basilica di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria - As you stroll through Galatina’s old town, you’ll encounter several aristocratic palaces before reaching the late Romanesque Basilica of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, constructed in 1390. The interior boasts frescoes by artists from the “Giotto school,” making the church second only to the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi in Italy for its pictorial cycles.
- The Town of Nardo - In Nardò, visitors can opt for an independent wine tasting at one of the region’s premier wineries. The cellar offers tasting experiences of wine from original vineyards, paired with appetizers; Taralli and focaccia bread accompany a 3-glass tasting, with typical cheese added for the 4-glass option. The full experience with 5 glasses of wine includes a cold cuts platter as well. Prices range from 30 to 40 euros per person, payable at the winery (advance booking is required, closed on Sundays, and subject to availability). If the wine tasting is not pursued, time can be spent at other stops, such as the beaches, or exploring Nardò’s historic center, a stunning medieval town with numerous historical baroque buildings, a castle, a square, and many churches. The most remarkable is the Basilica Cathedral, founded in the 11th Century, though all are unique.
- Spiaggia Cittadina a Santa Maria al Bagno - Travel to the Ionian coast, passing through Santa Maria al Bagno, which features a charming city beach and delightful seaside restaurants (with the option to stop for lunch), the four towers fortification built during the Aragonese period to protect a freshwater source, and the broken mountain, leading to the white beaches of Gallipoli.
- Spiaggia Padula Bianca - Pause at Rivabella beach. Here, a lovely pine forest leads to a stunning free beach and private lidos, so bring swimwear and towels to enjoy the beautiful sea.
- Centro Storico di Gallipoli - Gallipoli, known as the Ionian pearl, is divided between the modern city and the historic one. The ancient town is situated on a small island, connected to the mainland by a bridge ending with a Greek fountain, the oldest in Italy. Visitors have free time to explore the historic center, characterized by narrow streets with local handicraft shops, charming baroque churches, and aristocratic palaces. Additionally, one can walk along the castle walls, enjoying a drink on some lovely terraces by the sea, or have brunch, perhaps trying the typical sandwich “Puccia” filled with seafood specialties.
