The Baduy are a traditional Sundanese ethnic group residing in Banten province, just a few hours from Jakarta. Their villages are renowned because the Baduy traditionally avoid modern technology, although this is gradually changing.
The Baduy are divided into two distinct groups. The first group consists of communities in the area known as Baduy Luar, which includes 22 villages. These communities act as a protective barrier to the outside world for the 40 families living in the area called Baduy Dalam.
The journey begins with a visit to the Baduy tribe’s houses, where the outer parts are still constructed from straw. If fortunate, one might witness their communal activities (outer Baduy). Continuing the journey, travelers will encounter a slightly rocky path with inclines and declines. Along the way, many small rivers and barns owned by the Baduy can be seen. The houses in the Baduy village are still built from bamboo and palm fiber, all oriented towards the rising sun.
