- Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center - Access to the Visitor Center is available only when entering Red Rock Canyon for the Scenic Drive. Since the loop is one-way, visitors pass the Visitor Center at the start of the drive. This is the sole location with restrooms featuring running water, a water filling station, an Information Booth with trail maps, a Gift Shop, and outdoor exhibits that are worth exploring. Visitors also have the chance to see live desert tortoises.
- Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area - The Scenic Drive is the primary and most rewarding way to experience Red Rock Canyon, including the Visitor Center. A reservation is often required for the Scenic Drive during much of the year.
- Calico 1 - It’s difficult to bypass this initial stop in the Calico Hills without stepping onto the vibrant red rock. While visitors can simply park, exit their vehicle, and take in the breathtaking view while snapping some photos, many will be tempted to hike a portion of this moderate trail. The trail spans 2 - 6 miles from various start/end points, offering a taste of the stunning beauty and unique shapes of these magnificent rock formations.
- Calico Hills - Stop and admire the view! Visitors will want to capture even more photos of the Calico Hills from this perspective, discovering various shapes in these intricate rock formations. If fortunate enough to find a parking spot in this small lot, visitors can also hike part of the same Calico Hills trail accessible from Calico I, but with different views of the glorious red rocks.
- Sandstone Quarry Overlook - The most popular hiking trail in Red Rock Canyon starts here, at the site of an old quarry operation. Visitors can observe the cuts in the mountain sandstone, with some slabs still on-site. Look for rock climbers high above, blending into the scenery! The main attraction is the starting point of the Calico Tanks Trail. Although parking may require patience, it’s worth it to explore at least part of this moderate trail for the breathtaking views.
- High Point Overlook - Park and enjoy the view from this spot along the Scenic Drive.
- White Rock Trailhead - This is one of the few truly expansive overlooks of Red Rock Canyon, located at the highest elevation point in the area at 4,771 feet above sea level. Visitors can park, exit their vehicle, and take in the panoramic view as they slowly turn to see the surrounding mountain majesty.
- Willow Spring - A quick turn off the Scenic Drive leads to Willow Spring, a must-see location. Two highly recommended hikes start from this picturesque picnic area surrounded by mountains. The Petroglyph Wall Trail is a short, easy 0.15-mile hike to a cliffside adorned with ancient art over 800 years old, taking about 30 minutes round trip. The Willow Springs Loop is another easy trail (1.5 miles round-trip) that is worth exploring, as it runs parallel to the parking lot, starting from the picnic tables. Bighorn sheep often watch from the mountain ledges above, blending in with the scenery, so keep an eye out! Visitors will also pass by the largest ancient agave roasting pits. If a picnic lunch is on the agenda, enjoy the incredible view while taking a break.
- Lost Creek Canyon - Located near Willow Spring, this area offers a chance to enjoy the mountains while spotting bighorn sheep on the rocky cliffs. The Children’s Discovery Trail is a popular hike from this location, rated easy with some rocky terrain and a boardwalk, plus a hidden seasonal waterfall that typically flows between December and April. A variety of desert plant life can also be seen here.
- Ice Box Canyon - Ice Box Canyon is a favored spot for birdwatching and advanced hikers. The trailhead here is challenging and strenuous, but it’s worth stopping in the parking lot to appreciate the scenery and capture some photos.
- Red Rock Canyon Overlook - This is a vast and tranquil overlook. Visitors can take a moment to breathe in the fresh air and relax, surrounded by nature, listening to the wind through the mountains or the unique birds, including the western tanager, chirping in the Joshua Trees.
- Pine Creek Canyon - This stop offers views of the open desert and towering canyon walls, along with diverse plant life. Later in the day, this side of the Scenic Drive is silhouetted with the sun behind the mountains. A moderate hike from here leads past an old homestead site and into a meadow.
- Oak Creek Canyon - A short gravel road leads to this location, accessible by regular cars if driven slowly. Mule deer often frolic in this area, sometimes running past vehicles! The view is stunning where the canyon cuts into the Red Rock Escarpment, and it’s a brief detour off the Scenic Drive.
- Red Rock Canyon Overlook - This is arguably the finest overlook in Red Rock Canyon. Visitors should walk the paved trail starting at the helipad at the far end of the parking lot. The trail passes Joshua Trees to benches at the overlook’s tip, offering views of the giant mountains along the Scenic loop. It’s also a great spot for a picnic with a view. Don’t forget to take a selfie with this backdrop!
- Cowboy Trail Rides - Here, visitors can see horses, mules, and the beloved Jackson the Red Rock Burro if he’s ‘home’ and not on a trail ride. The area offers excellent mountain and canyon views, making it worth a quick stop. The Fossil Ridge Trail also begins here, and visitors might be tempted to book a horseback ride along the canyon paths!
- Red Spring Picnic Area - Another spot to enjoy a picnic with a breathtaking view.
