• Tunney Hunsaker Bridge - Named after Tunney Hunsaker, a police chief from Fayetteville. Hunsaker is also known for another achievement: He was Muhammad Ali’s first professional opponent! As expected, Hunsaker lost the match. However, he gave Ali a challenging fight.

• Wolf Creek Falls - In about half a mile, you’ll find the Kaymoor Trail, a challenging 16-mile trail running alongside the gorge. But this trail isn’t just for avid hikers! Just 500 feet down the trail is Wolf Creek Falls, cascading beautifully down a series of rapids.

• Fayetteville - If the name sounds familiar, it should. Fayetteville is named after the Marquis de Lafayette! He was the young Frenchman who became a crucial advisor and general to George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

• Concho Rim Overlook - From this vantage point, you can gaze over a dramatic horseshoe-shaped bend in the New River. The detour takes us slightly off the main path, but this is one of the most iconic views in New River Gorge.

• Oak Hill - In 1952, on the last night of the year, a snowstorm swept across the South. Williams found himself stranded in Montgomery, Alabama, where he hired a college student named Charlie Carr to drive him all the way to Ohio.

• Dunloup Creek Falls - We’re nearing Dunloup Creek Falls. Here, Dunloup Creek meets the New River, where it cascades 20 feet down a stunning sandstone shelf.

• Mount Hope - Like most towns in this region of West Virginia, Mount Hope’s history begins with the discovery of coal. In the late 1800s, miners discovered coal at nearby Turkey Knob. It was only a matter of time before the streets of Mount Hope were bustling with industrious miners and their families.

• Thomas Burford Pugh Memorial Bridge - We’re about to cross the Thomas Burford Pugh Bridge, which spans the New River at the small town of Prince. Although we’ll drive over the bridge for free today, this wasn’t always the case. Back in the 1930s, each driver had to pay a hefty fee of… 25 cents! That was a significant amount during the Great Depression!

• Quinnimont - At one time, nearly 500 people resided in Quinnimont. Almost everyone had some connection to the nearby mines.

• Layland Miners Memorial - Ahead are the remnants of Layland, a former coal town. Look to our left shortly for a collection of abandoned coal company houses. These dilapidated buildings were owned by the local mining company, which rented the homes to their impoverished workers.

• Meadow Bridge - We’re now passing through the small town of Meadow Bridge. While we’ve seen many coal towns today, this is our first true timber town. The nearby Meadow River Lumber Company once cut and sold millions of feet of lumber.

• Sandstone Falls - Sandstone Falls are the largest series of falls on the entire New River! These falls formed over millennia, as the force of the New River eroded the soft rock beneath the layers of sandstone.
