Our guides, who are fluent in English, are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia). They are passionate about sharing their expertise while ensuring the Gunung Leuser National Park remains clean and safe for both people and wildlife.
Our day tours and activities have a positive impact on the local community. By purchasing one of our trekking tours, 10% of the proceeds are donated to children in Bukit Lawang who cannot afford education and to single mothers facing financial difficulties. This support enables children to attend school and eventually secure employment to sustain themselves and their families.

best trip ever…100% reccomend! - One of the best trips we have ever done. Highly reccomend. Amazing guides, amazing food and main thing we managed to see the orangutans. The guides and chef sugi, rahmat and nasir were so kind and helpful to us! Also provided entertainment on the night couldn’t ask for anymore from them!

What a superb experience... - What a fantastic trip! We booked with SOT to go and see wild orangutans and to camp in the Sumatran jungle, both of which exceeded our expectations, however, it was the team at SOT that made our experience so special. Always smiling, our guides seemed to truly love their job, their knowledge of the jungle and the wildlife within was superb - not to mention the truly delicious food they continued to produce, made our jungle experience truly special. As with all these trips, it is the people that make it and that was certainly the case for us. Special mentions must go to the effervescent Gill, who sang and smiled our way through the jungle - every team needs a Gill to keep moral high. And to Jack, for his incredible ability to provide restaurant grade food from seemingly nowhere. And then Dadek, whom managed our booking, transport and accommodation with the utmost professionalism. It would be hard to imagine how they could improve on their offering - If you are planning a trip to the Jungles of Sumatra, look no further than the team at Sumatra Orangutan Trekking.

The best experience - My husband and I went on a 2 day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang and it was the best experience! Our guides Nasir and Risky were welcoming, funny, kind and they literally took care of everything from the booking step until the very end. We were a small group of 3, which made the experience almost private. We saw an orangutan within the first hour of our trek, a green viper and later on lots of Thomas Leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons and a hornbill. We enjoyed the fruit and the food Nasir and Risky prepared for us along the way, and had a great jungle dinner with a little magic card show afterwards! The trek itself was physically demanding, primarily because of the heat and humidity, but our guides made lots of stops and looked after us. On the way back we trekked some more and then took the river tubes to the lodge, which was refreshing and fun! We were even able to take a shower at the company’s office before leaving later that day, which was very kind of them. Nasir and Risky were very knowledgeable and I feel like we learned a lot. A big thank you and hopefully we get to do a longer trek the next time! Definitely recommend this tour.

Jungle trekking - WOW! We had such an incredible experience trekking here. A massive shout out to our guides Nasir and Alvi for always laughing with us, showing us magic tricks, helping us and guiding us brilliantly. We were taken care of straight from the airport, our driver was waiting at the airport for us to take us to Bukit Lawang. On arrival we were picked up on motorbikes and taken to the nights accom. We never went hungry with constant fruit, biscuits, and gorgeous food made by ‘Jungle Mama’, maybe the best we’ve had in our 5 months in Asia! We saw lots of wildlife and orangutang in an ethical way, we were never too close and admired from a distance with no feeding or interaction. We couldn’t fault this trip and has been a massive highlight of our trip. Thank you to Sumatra Orangutang Trekking - our only negative was we didn’t book to stay for longer. We WILL be back :)

2D 1N jungle trek - Had an absolutely incredible experience on this trip - Dedek and his team organised everything for us including transfers, trekking, guides, food etc. It was seamless and so easy for us to enjoy the trip. We saw 2 Orangutans across the 2 day trek, hiking in the jungle was great, the scenery was amazing. Could not recommend this experience and company more!

Great trip - I had a great time in the jungle. Our guides were very knowledgeable and took great care. But the terrain especially downhill can be a bit tricky for people with less balance or climbing ability.

Solo Jungle Trek - I’ve just finished a two-day, one-night trek with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking, and I honestly couldn’t recommend them more.
From my very first point of contact with Dedek through to being dropped off at the airport, everything was seamless. Dedek was incredibly helpful, patiently answering all my questions and guiding me through the booking process.
The trek itself was both challenging and breathtaking in the best possible way, and I loved every moment of it. Our guides, Ponidi and Cipta, deserve a special mention – they were wonderfully kind, extremely knowledgeable, and their experience in the jungle was truly impressive.
Although we only spotted one semi-wild orangutan over the two days, we were lucky enough to see brown and black gibbons, Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, hornbills, and countless colourful butterflies, which made the whole experience unforgettable.
The food was delicious as well, and they catered for my vegan diet without any issues.
If you’re planning a trip to North Sumatra, don’t hesitate to book with them – and if you can, spend more time than I did. You won’t regret it.

Bukit Lawang best trip - Loved this experience from start to finish! Brema and Mehmet were the most amazing guides who told us much about the jungle while also maintaining a very funny and chill atmosphere. The hike was sometimes a bit challenging, but they made sure the tempo was accessible for everyone and used lots of breaks. I think they would even change the route based on the group they have. They were in contact with other groups to ensure the sightings of multiple orang utans, gibbons, hornbills and other monkeys. We had lots of food or fruit breaks, and were never hungry during the trip. At night, they provide entertainment too! Would most definely recommend to go to Sumatra to do this trip!!

We spent two days one night trekking through the jungle. During our tour we saw tons of animals including orangutans. - My family and I had an excellent experience with Sumatra orangutan Trekking. Everything from the pickup at the airport to the tour itself was great. We spent one night camping in the Jungle with two days of trekking. Our guides Memet and Donney were fantastic, sharing their extensive knowledge and love for the jungle with us. I would holy recommend using this company if you are considering a trip to the Sumatra.
