Into the Heart of the Jungle

As someone who has spent years advocating for wildlife preservation, the allure of the Gunung Leuser National Park in Langkat Regency was irresistible. The promise of an ethical encounter with the endangered orangutans was enough to draw me in, but the experience offered by Sumatra Orangutan Trekking was beyond my expectations. The camp itself was a testament to the simplicity and beauty of jungle life. We washed in the river, slept under mosquito nets, and enjoyed meals prepared by the talented Ekong. The connection to nature was profound, and as night fell, the sounds of the jungle lulled us to sleep.

On the final day, after a hearty breakfast and a swim in a nearby waterfall, we embraced the playful side of the jungle with some “jungle makeup” courtesy of Nata and Ekong. The journey back to town was a joyous ride down the river on tubes, a fitting end to an incredible adventure. As we returned to Bukit Lawang, the sense of accomplishment and connection to the natural world was overwhelming.
