A Journey Through Åland: Discovering the Island’s Hidden Charms
Drawn by whispers of untouched beauty and local charm, I embarked on a customizable tour of the Åland Islands. With Janne as my guide, I discovered the island’s rich heritage, met its spirited locals, and embraced its wild beauty.
A Serendipitous Encounter with Åland’s Soul
As the train gently rocked me towards the Åland Islands, I found myself reminiscing about the many journeys I’ve taken across Europe. Each trip, a tapestry of landscapes and stories, woven together by the rhythmic clatter of the rails. This time, however, I was stepping off the train and onto a new adventure—a customizable tour of the Åland Islands, a place whispered about in travel circles for its untouched beauty and local charm.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by Janne, my guide for the day. Her wild hair and vivid eyes spoke of a life lived in harmony with nature. “Wherever you want, we’ll go,” she said with a smile, and I knew I was in for a unique experience. We set off in her little blue car, a trusty companion for our journey.
Our first stop was a viewing tower, Uffe on the Berget, which offered a panoramic view of the islands. The café there, reminiscent of a Tyrolean retreat, served Åland pancakes with cream foam and compote—a delightful introduction to the local flavors. As we sipped our coffee, Janne and I shared stories, and I found myself reflecting on why I had embarked on this journey. It was a moment of connection, both to the place and to a fellow traveler.
Discovering Åland’s Rich Heritage
Our journey continued to Kastelholm Castle, a medieval fortress that stood as a testament to Åland’s storied past. Though I usually prefer the vibrancy of life over the quiet of museums, the castle’s history captivated me. Janne’s tales of the past brought the stones to life, and I found myself grateful for this glimpse into Åland’s heritage.
Adjacent to the castle was a small collection of craftsmen and a charming restaurant. I couldn’t resist purchasing a few local treasures—a ring, some beautiful eggs, and a bottle of apple must. Janne explained that Åland produces a significant portion of Finland’s apples, thanks to its unique climate. As we drove through lush apple plantations, I marveled at the island’s agricultural pride.
Our next stop was a visit to Karl Erik Bergman, a friend of Janne’s and a man who embodied the spirit of Åland. His home, a red wooden house surrounded by firewood, was a testament to self-sufficiency. “I am a fisherman in summer, a poet in winter,” he told me, his eyes twinkling with stories of the sea. It was a meeting with a true original, a man who lived in harmony with the land and sea.
Embracing the Wild Beauty of Åland
As the day drew to a close, Janne took me to what she called “the crown of Åland.” This was her sanctuary, a place where the land met the sea in a dramatic embrace. The terrain was rugged, with moss-covered rocks and windswept branches pointing towards the horizon. Janne moved with ease, her feet finding purchase on the familiar ground.
We stood at the edge of the island, the sea’s pulse echoing in our ears. The wind whipped around us, carrying the scent of salt and adventure. It was a moment of pure connection with nature, a reminder of the wild beauty that still exists in our world.
Before returning to Mariehamn, we made one last stop at the Stallhagen brewery. There, on the terrace, Åland’s best accordion player serenaded us with the melodies of Evert Taube. It was the perfect end to a day filled with discovery and delight.
As I boarded the train back to the mainland, I carried with me the memories of Åland—the taste of pancakes, the stories of its people, and the wild beauty of its landscapes. It was a journey that reminded me of the joy of slow travel, of taking the time to truly connect with a place and its soul.
