- Patan Durbar Square - Separated from Kathmandu by the Bagmati River, Patan was once a distinct kingdom. It is one of the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley. Known locally by its Sanskrit name, ‘Lalitpur’, meaning ‘city of beauty’, Patan is a vibrant center of Buddhist and Hindu culture, rich with religious art, temples, and monasteries. Patan Durbar Square boasts the highest concentration of Newari architecture in the valley.
The intriguing narrow streets around the square feature over 600 stupas. The Patan Museum, housed in the restored palace of the 17th-century Malla Kings, displays bronze statues and religious artifacts, some dating back to the 11th century. The museum’s gilded doors and windows lead to the Krishna Mandir Temple, constructed by King Siddhi Narasigh Malla in 1637, which remains active today. This temple has three floors and 21 golden pinnacles, with the first floor dedicated to Krishna, the second to Shiva, and the third to Lokeshwor.
- Bhaktapur Durbar Square - Bhaktapur, an ancient Newari town located about 12km east of Kathmandu, was founded in the 12th century and became the most prominent of the Malla Kingdoms in the 15th century. Currently, it is Nepal’s third-largest city, renowned for its culture, temples, and craftsmanship. Bhaktapur, meaning ‘City of Devotees’, truly embodies its name with more temples than Kathmandu or Patan. It resembles a living museum, offering a delightful walking experience with its traffic-free cobbled streets filled with temples, courtyards, squares, and wells. Tradition thrives in Bhaktapur, where visitors can observe craftsmen practicing their age-old arts of pottery and wood carving. It’s an excellent place to purchase souvenirs. The town’s traditional lifestyle is evident everywhere, with rice being sun-dried and water collected from communal taps.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square is renowned for the 55-Window Palace, which served as the royal seat until 1769. The intricately carved windows and doors house The National Art Gallery, featuring Buddhist Paubha scroll paintings, palm leaf manuscripts, and stone carvings. The palace’s Golden Gate leads to the Taleju Temple, built in 1756, and the bell that has been rung for centuries to honor the Goddess Taleju, along with the Royal Bath, featuring its Golden Faucet.
The five-story Nyatapola Temple is the tallest pagoda temple in Nepal. Dedicated to the Goddess Lakshmi in 1702, its struts, doors, windows, and tympanums are adorned with carvings of divine figures, including two-meter-high stone statues of elephants, lions, griffons, and a pair of tantric goddesses.
