Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela - Take the morning flight departing from Addis at approximately 7:10 am to the sacred land of New Jerusalem, Lalibela. Upon arrival at Lalibela Airport, you will be greeted and driven about 23 km to the quaint town of Lalibela for check-in and refreshments. Begin your exploration with the Northern Group: Bet Medhane Alem, home to the Lalibela Cross and considered the largest monolithic church globally, possibly modeled after St Mary of Zion in Aksum. It connects to Bete Maryam (potentially the oldest church), Bete Golgotha (renowned for its art and believed to house King Lalibela’s tomb), the Selassie Chapel, and the Tomb of Adam. After a break, continue to the second group of rock-hewn churches known as the Western Group: Bete Giyorgis, acclaimed as the most finely crafted and best-preserved church, and the third group called The Eastern Group: Bete Amanuel (possibly the former royal chapel), Bete Merkorios (which might have been a prison), Bete Abba Libanos, and Bete Gabriel-Rufael (possibly a former royal palace).
