2 days in Lalibela - My partner and I spent two days in Lalibela. Maereg is a very professional and knowledgeable tour guide with strong historical, political, and cultural knowledge, which in my opinion is essential to truly understand Lalibela. He also has excellent English communication skills and explains everything clearly about Lalibela and Ethiopia. Thank you — I can highly recommend him.

Very helpful and informative guide - Maereg was great. On top of the informative Lalibela churches tour he gave, he also helped me with so many other things - when my other tour in the region informed me of the last minutes changes, he helped me navigate the issues; he also helped me get cash from the bank and SIM card for internet - all done in an extremely efficient but not hasty manner. He was also a great photographer! Maereg was not only doing tours in Lalibela but also around the country, which makes him the go to person for many other trip suggestions and great learnings!

Great guide in Lalibela - This was an excellent one day tour of the churches of Lalibela, which I did as a one day side trip from Addis Ababa. Maereg picked me up at the airport in the late morning, drove me to my hotel and we began seeing the churches in the afternoon. We saw the second set the next morning and then he returned me to the airport. Maereg was a fabulous guide- he's trained at the Addis Ababa travel University and has clearly refined and developed his presentation. He tailors it very well to the individual. I don't usually like tours because they're a little bit overly detailed but he instead gave me a very good overview, including appropriate culture, relevant modern history and a real locals grasp on the town and these marvelous churches. Fair amount of reasonable grade climbing but lots of stairs and ledges to climb over. You should not miss seeing this world heritage heritage site if you come to the area... Churches remind me of the Great Indian site of Ellora This tour has my highest recommendation,

Ethiopia is no longer a secret to me - What I remember most about my guide Maereg was his diligent service, promptness, efficient time-management, and impressive knowledge of Ethiopia - the ancient and the new. During the trip, Maereg made sure that I felt at ease, safe and secure as a female traveler. And that meant a lot.
For eight days Maereg got to know me and I got to experience the wonders of Ethiopia.
Firstly, the capital, Addis Ababa, the highest elevation of a city in Africa, which was more like a state than a city, boasted national/ state museums, cultural centers, numerous universities/ UNESCO World Heritage Sites, churches, cathedrals, cafés (the origin of coffee began here in Ethiopia), memorials, financial, telecommunications, infrastructures, shop centers, outdoor markets, etc.,.
Then there was the massive rock-hewn monolith churches of Lalibela, (woa!) which is home to the oldest Christian communities in the world (as well as for Maereg, his lovely wife, and adorable children who were kind enough to have invited us to their home to meet the family & served us a delicious authentic Ethiopian dinner complimented with Honey wine). Also, Lalibela is known as Ethiopia's "New Jerusalem" because it holds religious importance and the opportunity to pilgrimage for there Orthodox Christians.
And lastly, Gondar, once the capital of the former Ethiopian Empire, showcased palaces, castles, churches, fortified walls, built by each royal successor beginning the 17th century and has been called the "Camelot of Africa," idealized as in a place of high-level culture with a purpose/ belief of what community with a shared purpose can achieve.
Since returning home, the trip to Ethiopia has stayed with me like a hum, tune or song which reminded me that for eight days I was in paradise. I hope to carry this happiness in me forward until I can get back to that happy place, Ethiopia 🇪🇹 . Thanks, Maereg for all that you did to make this experience possible.
Sincerely,
Romanáh H-B
