The Journey Begins: A Delayed Start, But an Unforgettable Adventure

As a wildlife photographer and travel writer, I’ve always been drawn to the raw beauty of Africa. This year, I embarked on a thrilling 7-day safari adventure to explore the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Natron. Despite a 30-hour flight delay, the team at Safari Soles, led by our guide Simon, ensured that our journey was nothing short of extraordinary. Simon, affectionately known as “The Safari Monster,” went above and beyond to keep our itinerary intact, even offering to drive through the night to get us back on track.

From the moment we set foot in Tanzania, Simon’s expertise and passion for wildlife were evident. The crater’s reliable water sources attract a variety of animals, making it a prime location for observing the intricate dynamics of predator and prey. As we descended into the crater, the breathtaking views and the sheer number of animals left me in awe. It’s experiences like these that fuel my passion for conservation and sustainable travel.

Lake Natron: A Hidden Gem and Flamingo Haven

The highlight of our adventure was the off-the-beaten-path journey to Lake Natron. Nestled below the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, this soda lake is a vital breeding ground for over 2.5 million lesser flamingos. The sight of thousands of flamingos painting the lake’s surface pink was a spectacle I will never forget. Our guided bush walk to the lake allowed us to immerse ourselves in the serene beauty of this remote location.

Lake Natron’s hyper-alkaline waters create a unique ecosystem that supports a variety of life forms. As we explored the area, I couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of preserving such delicate environments. The Maasai people, who call this region home, have a deep connection to the land, and their sustainable practices offer valuable lessons in conservation.

This journey was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that Africa has to offer and the importance of responsible tourism in preserving it.
