Fela resided there with his family until his passing in 1997, and the museum is filled with his personal belongings and artifacts related to his life and career. Fela’s tomb is also on the museum premises.
The name Kalakuta Republic means “rascal” in Swahili. The Kalakuta Museum officially opened on October 15, 2012, Fela’s birthday, and is now managed by Fela’s son, Kunle.

Visit Badagry Slave Museum - The Badagry Heritage Museum was once the District Officer’s Office, built in 1863 by the British colonial government. It now houses the history of slavery in Badagry and the legends responsible for its abolition.
Gberefu Island (Point of No Return) - Gberefu Island is a significant part of Badagry’s slavery history, as it hosted the ships that carried millions of slaves out of Africa. The natives of Badagry believe it was founded by a renowned farmer named Agbedeh, who lived on Gberefu Island and maintained farmland across the lagoon, now known as modern-day Badagry. It is believed that people have lived along the coast of Gberefu, which eventually led to the establishment of Badagry. Fishing, farming, and salt-making from ocean water were the main occupations of the people.
