Praia da Marinha is frequently featured in international advertisements and television commercials.
- Marina de Portimão - Nestled at the mouth of the River Arade, Portimão is celebrated for its splendid sandy beaches with warm, tranquil waters, making it a highly attractive holiday spot.
Portimão boasts a rich fishing heritage that flourished between the 19th and 20th centuries, driven by the canning industry and tourism. Many of the buildings in the historic center, including the Portimão Museum, a beautifully renovated former cannery awarded the Museum of the Year by the Council of Europe in 2010, date back to this era. The museum honors the people and the city that have thrived by the sea for centuries.
Visitors should not miss the simply designed Chapel of São José de Alcalar or the impressive Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception), built in the 15th century atop a hill, prominently featured in the city’s skyline. Although damaged by the 1755 earthquake, it retains its exquisite original Gothic portal. For a relaxing break, the shade of the trees in the Manuel Bivar Garden offers a perfect spot to watch fishing boats and pleasure craft sail by. Alternatively, the promenade beside the Marina is one of the city’s most vibrant areas, both day and night.
Most restaurants, known for serving grilled sardines, a local favorite, are located along the waterfront near the docks. While sardines are enjoyed throughout the region and the country, they are particularly famous in Portimão, celebrated with a festival in August. Additionally, there are numerous other fish and seafood specialties to savor, such as clams, whelk bean stew, casseroles, and bouillabaisses. The region also offers broad beans, cornmeal (similar to polenta), and traditional almond- and fig-based sweets.
Praia da Rocha, approximately 3 kilometers from the center, is perhaps the most famous beach in the Algarve, with its iconic vast stretch of sand known worldwide. It has been a bustling seaside resort since the early 20th century, featuring a casino and a wide array of leisure activities. Historically, it held significant strategic importance in the 15th century. The Fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar was constructed here to protect the harbor and residents from pirate attacks, working in tandem with the São João do Arade Fort in Ferragudo, near another expansive sandy beach aptly named Praia Grande.
Today, the Praia da Rocha Fortress offers a splendid view of the city, river, and sea, especially enchanting at sunset. From this vantage point, one can also glimpse some of the beaches to the west, starting with Três Castelos Beach. These beaches, varying in size, are framed by rugged rocks that enhance the landscape, including Careanos, Vau, Barranco das Canas, João d’Arens, Prainha, and Três Irmãos beaches. This sequence concludes at the extensive sandy beach of Praia do Alvor and its estuary, a lagoon area significant for birdwatching.
To fully appreciate the Portimão area, it’s essential to explore it from all angles. Consider taking a boat trip along the coast to discover beaches inaccessible by land and admire the rock formations. Enthusiasts of game fishing will find this destination ideal, as the fertile sea is home to large species like swordfish. For different scenery, travel up the River Arade estuary to Silves, passing through lush green hills. Along this short journey, you’ll encounter a diverse array of memorable images.
- Praia da Rocha - Praia da Rocha is a beach in the municipality of Portimão, Algarve (Portugal). This beach boasts a vast expanse of sand, covering a total area of 146,000 m², along 1.5 km of coastline. Adjacent to the beach stands the Santa Catarina Fortress, built in the 17th century to defend the Arade river bar.
- Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse - The cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland are among the Algarve’s most remarkable natural features. This dramatic limestone coastline is characterized by sea pillars, delicate rock arches, and hidden grottos, all sculpted by fierce winter storms. The Ponta da Piedade is a stark and windswept headland, with its true beauty revealed upon descending the cliffs, where the exposed cliffs display their golden hue, and the turquoise sea waters lap against precariously balanced rock formations. The headland is simply breathtaking.
- Praia Dona Ana - Praia da Dona Ana is one of the Algarve’s most picturesque beaches, offering a perfect setting for a day at the beach. Located south of Lagos, it is nestled within the limestone cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland. This stunning natural environment features highly eroded cliffs revealing layers of golden strata, calm turquoise sea waters, and soft, inviting sands. Alongside the beautiful scenery, the beach provides all the expected amenities, including beach restaurants, shops, and showers.
- Praia do Camilo - This small beach is nestled between cliffs, featuring intriguing rock formations. Its waters are clear and calm, and access to the beach is via a long staircase.
- Lagos - Lagos is a town in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, known for its walled old town, cliffs, and Atlantic beaches. Steep wooden steps lead to the sandy cove of Camilo Beach. The nearby cliffs of Ponta da Piedade offer breathtaking views of the headland and a lighthouse. St. Anthony’s Church, an ornate 18th-century church, stands opposite the Governors’ Castle, a castle with a baroque facade and towers.
- Farol do Cabo de São Vicente - Head to Portugal’s southernmost tip, Sagres, to visit the St. Vincent lighthouse and Sagres Fortress. Enjoy the stunning coastal scenery throughout the day with informative commentary from your guide.
- Fortaleza de Sagres - The village of Sagres was rebuilt on the ruins left by the 1755 earthquake, with the port over southwestern continental Europe, where fishermen still sell their catch from three o’clock in the afternoon, Monday through Friday.
The Algarve is renowned as one of Europe’s premier surfing destinations, with Sagres as one of its central hubs. Its location at the southern tip of Portugal ensures consistently excellent surfing conditions.
The main street, Rua Comandante Matoso, connects the fishing port and Whaling Beach at one end with the main square, all supported by a new urban area of villas and apartments.
Nearby are the ruins of the Fort of Whaling (16th century), damaged by British privateer Francis Drake in 1587, when Portugal was temporarily allied with Spain, making it an enemy of England.
