From Surf to Rapids: Navigating Costa Rica’s Sarapiqui River
When the waves are calm, and the surfboards are stowed, it’s time to seek new thrills. Join me as I trade the ocean for the river, navigating the rapids of Costa Rica’s Sarapiqui River. This adventure promises excitement and a fresh perspective on the natural wonders of this beautiful country.
A Serendipitous Start
The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as my wife and I packed up our gear, ready to leave Bojos de Toro for a new adventure. We were headed to the Sarapiqui River, a place I’d heard whispers about from fellow travelers. Known for its class II-III rapids, it promised a thrill without the intimidation of more advanced courses. As seasoned surfers, we were no strangers to the water, but the idea of navigating a river’s twists and turns was a new kind of excitement.
Our journey began with a slight hiccup. We had to leave before breakfast, and the restaurant we planned to visit was closed. But in true Costa Rican fashion, we were directed to a local soda across the street. There, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast that set the tone for the day. The locals assured us that we were on “Tico time,” so there was no rush. This laid-back approach was a refreshing reminder of why we love this region so much.
Riding the Rapids
Arriving at the rafting center, we were greeted by Arturo, our guide for the day. His easygoing demeanor and clear expertise immediately put us at ease. As we walked through the center to the “put-in” spot, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of anticipation. The river was calling, and I was ready to answer.
The Sarapiqui River did not disappoint. The rapids, with names like “El Cano” and “Confusion,” provided just the right amount of thrill. Arturo’s instructions were clear and concise, guiding us through each twist and turn with precision. A kayaker accompanied us, not only as a safety measure but also to capture the moments on camera. It was a comfort to know we were in capable hands, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience.
As we paddled down the river, the surrounding jungle came alive. Birds of every color flitted through the trees, and the air was filled with the sounds of nature. It was a reminder of the beauty that Costa Rica holds, a beauty that never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I visit.
A Perfect Ending
After a few hours on the river, we returned to the center for a well-deserved lunch. The meal was simple yet satisfying, a perfect end to an exhilarating morning. As we sat and reflected on the day’s adventure, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the Sarapiqui River.
This trip was a highlight of our time in Costa Rica, a reminder of the joys of exploration and the thrill of trying something new. While surfing will always be my first love, rafting has found a special place in my heart. If you ever find yourself in this beautiful country, I highly recommend taking the plunge and experiencing the Sarapiqui River for yourself. It’s an adventure you won’t soon forget.
