Saona Island possesses not only stunning natural beauty, but also holds an intriguing past. The indigenous tribe, the Taínos, originally called it Adamanay. However, with the arrival of Christopher Columbus, the island received its new moniker, Bella Savonesa, in tribute to Michele da Cuneo, a Savona native from Italy.

The island is home to the well-known Cotubanamá cave, the site where the Taino leader who shared this name met his end. The cave is now an impressive tourist attraction on Saona.

Saona Island is a literal movie star. It has been a filming location for some scenes from the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean.
