Setting Sail to Saona Island

The sun had barely risen when I found myself at the dock, ready to embark on a journey to Saona Island. The early morning air was crisp, and the anticipation of the adventure ahead was palpable. As a former professional surfer, the ocean has always been my playground, and the promise of exploring new waters was too enticing to resist. Our small group of 14, a mix of families and fellow adventurers, boarded the speedboat with excitement. The roar of the engine signaled the start of our journey, and soon we were skimming across the Caribbean Sea, the wind in our hair and the horizon stretching endlessly before us.

Our first stop was the quaint town of Mano Juan, nestled on Saona Island. Here, we were greeted with a simple yet satisfying breakfast of grilled cheese sandwiches and fresh fruit. As we ate, we learned about the local turtle conservation efforts from a community leader. The passion and dedication of the locals to protect these gentle creatures were inspiring, and it was a reminder of the delicate balance of life in these beautiful islands. The kids in our group were particularly fascinated, their eyes wide with wonder as they listened to tales of turtle hatchlings making their way to the sea.

Beach Bliss and Mangrove Mysteries

After our enlightening visit to Mano Juan, we made our way to the stunning Abanico Beach. The white sands and turquoise waters were a sight to behold, and it wasn’t long before we were all diving into the warm embrace of the Caribbean Sea. As someone who spends a lot of time in the water, I can confidently say that the beaches of Saona Island are among the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. We lounged on beach chairs, sipped on refreshing drinks from the open bar, and indulged in a delicious buffet lunch featuring local Dominican flavors.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore the mangroves, a vital part of the island’s ecosystem. Our guide, Melvin, shared his knowledge of the mangroves’ role in protecting the coastline and providing a habitat for various marine life. As we glided through the calm waters, we were lucky enough to spot a few turtles surfacing for air, a magical moment that left us all in awe. The mangroves’ serene beauty and ecological importance were a testament to the wonders of nature that thrive in these islands.

Snorkeling Adventures and Starfish Encounters

The final leg of our journey took us to Palmilla Beach, a hidden gem known for its natural pools and vibrant marine life. Here, we donned our snorkeling gear and plunged into the crystal-clear waters. The underwater world was teeming with colorful fish, and I felt a familiar thrill as I swam alongside them, my mind drifting back to my surfing days when the ocean was my second home.

One of the highlights of the day was our encounter with starfish. In a shallow area of water, we gently held these fascinating creatures, marveling at their unique textures and vibrant colors. It was a moment of pure connection with the ocean, a reminder of the simple joys that island life offers.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Bayahibe, the sun setting on the horizon and casting a golden glow over the sea. Our hearts were full, and our spirits lifted by the incredible experiences we had shared. The Saona Island Adventure was more than just a tour; it was a journey into the heart of the Caribbean, a celebration of its natural beauty and the vibrant life it sustains. I left with a renewed appreciation for the ocean and the islands I call home, eager to share this adventure with all of you.
