Puma Punku - Pumapunku or Puma Punku (in Aymara and Quechua, “Gate of the Puma”) is a 6th-century, T-shaped terraced artificial mound, strategically aligned, featuring a sunken courtyard and a monumental structure at its summit, located near Tiwanaku, La Paz, Bolivia. It is part of the Pumapunku complex within the Tiwanaku archaeological site, an ancient complex in the Andes of western Bolivia, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
-
Akapana - The most striking monument in Tiwanaku is the Akapana Pyramid. Originally, it was a pyramid with seven stacked platforms and stone retaining walls, reaching a height of over 18 meters. Only the lowest platform and part of one intermediate wall remain intact.
-
Kalasasaya - The Kalasasaya, meaning “standing stones” in Aymara, is a principal temple of the Tiwanaku archaeological complex in Bolivia, constructed around 500 AD. Its notable features include a rectangular structure with stone walls and sandstone columns, a sunken central courtyard, and alignment with the cardinal points, serving as a vital ceremonial center and astronomical observatory.
-
Tiawanaku - Sacred City - The Semi-Subterranean Temple is situated in the eastern sector of the Kalasasaya Temple. The walls are crafted from finely finished red sandstone ashlars, interspersed with large vertical pillars. Some pillars still exhibit anthropomorphic details in low relief, such as a foot. Embedded in its walls and along the perimeter are 175 anthropomorphic club heads carved from sandstone, ignimbrite, and limestone. This site is the origin of the Bennett or Pachamama Monolith and the Khontiki.
