Good Hiking Shoes Fun Adventure to Remember - This was a wonderful new adventure with friends! Our guides Chris and Juan Carlos were awesome. They live for and appreciate their Costa Rican life and clearly love sharing it with others. They were fun and informative obout everything we came across in our hikes. We saw howler monkeys, sloths, mot mots, snake, frog, cati quati, wild turkey and other birds, many different plants etc. The hike was a lot of steps thru rooty terrain, so expect that! This is an all day thing, we loved it but were thankful to take the lunch break! The waterfall was my personal highlight, a memory never to be forgotten!! Also loved the volcano views, hanging bridges, and hot springs- so enjoyable and fun!

So much fun packed into one day! - Long but incredibly fun day! Chris, Vega and Richard took great care of us. They were fun and enthusiastic guides. The volcano walk was very interesting. They were great at teaching us history and pointing out critters. Next was lunch. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt like it was just ok. Not terrible. Just ok. Chicken breast with a cheese sauce, veggies, salad and white rice. Next was the waterfall hike which was longgggg. Like 500 steps down and then another 500 back up. The waterfall itself was epic. We swam the whole time we were there. The Maleku Indigenous village was ok. A little tourist trap-ish. We spent a day with an actual Indigenous family and that was far more authentic but this was a quick little glimpse into their world. Last was the hot springs which was a perfect ending to the long day!

Beautiful Views - My group of 7 adults (ranging age 32-70) had a good time on this tour. Our guide for the day was William. We were picked up from our housing in La Fortuna and drove ~15 min to the access point for La Fortuna Waterfall where we had open air transport to the hiking access point. There we hiked down the rough stairs to the waterfall where we swam in the refreshing water before hiking back up the stairs. The waterfall was beautiful and very impressive! We enjoyed learning about the history of the waterfall. At the top they gave us delicious pineapple before we hopped in a van (~5 min) to go see a reproduction of a Maleku village (the indigenous people of Costa Rica). Here we saw traditional buildings, learned about the culture and had the opportunity to purchase art, etc created by the Maleku people. From here we hopped in a van for a ride down the the restaurant (~15 min). The food was good! Traditional Costa Rican meal of rice, beans, plantains, protein option & salad. After eating there was a nice landscaped garden path and butterfly garden we could view. It had many of the Blue Morpho Butterflies and other varieties. The garden had a large tadpole pond and we were able to see a Poison Dart Frog. From here we drove ~30 min to mirado el silencio where we hiked to the highest viewpoint of Arenal Volcano. Along the way you could see the changes in the biome/recovery from the various eruptions and the process of reforestation over time. After this we rode back towards La Fortuna ~40 min and went to a Hot Springs location. The hot springs were naturally fed, but they were man made pool areas the spring water was directed into (so while the water temps were natural, the environment was not). There were many different temperature options ranging from 39 C to 28 C. After this we were given the option of staying at the hot springs longer and taking a taxi home or riding the bus back. Our Guide: William was pleasant and clearly extremely into history. Perhaps a little too into history. For the volcano portion of the tour our group was losing interest due to the length of his talks about the history of the volcano. It was interesting information, just provided in a bit too much detail/ repeated. The standing and listening for long periods of time was uncomfortable (due to the rocky terrain/ no places to sit). William was great about giving us infomration on the area, pointing out local wildfile, etc. Notes/Tips: Wear your swimsuit under your clothing at the beginning. The changing area is at the start of the hike, so it just makes it easier if you start out with swim gear on. We changed out of our swimwear at the bottom platform (just using towels for privacy) so we didn't have to hike up in wet suits. Bring solid watershoes/ strap on sandals, etc with toe protection for walking in the waterfall and you will save yourself potential pain. For most of the day you are unable to leave your extra items in the van or any other area, so only pack what you need and make sure everything is bagged, etc. For the La Fortuna portion, everything you have with you will get wet to some extent. As you hike down you will encounter horizontal rain that is always occurring due to the biome. Due to this I'd recommend anything you don't want to get wet have sealed in plastic/waterproof bags.
