Riding the Rapids: A Day of Adventure on the Balsa River
When the unexpected happens, sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Join me as I navigate the thrilling rapids of the Balsa River in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, and discover the joy of embracing the unknown.
A Change of Plans
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’m no stranger to the unexpected twists and turns that come with the territory. But when I found myself in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, ready to embark on a white-water rafting adventure, I was in for a surprise. I had initially planned to take on the Class II/III rapids, thinking it would be a nice, easy ride to ease into the day. However, upon arrival at the CR Descents office, I was informed that the Class II/III wasn’t running, and instead, I’d be tackling the more challenging Class III/IV rapids.
I won’t lie; the news made me a bit anxious. The thought of navigating more intense rapids was daunting, especially since I was used to the rhythm of the ocean rather than the rush of a river. But, as any good adventurer knows, sometimes you just have to go with the flow—literally. So, I hopped on the bus, ready to see what the Balsa River had in store for me.
Figo to the Rescue
Enter Figo, our guide for the day. From the moment he introduced himself, his calm demeanor and infectious enthusiasm put me at ease. He suggested we take a smaller boat for a faster, more exhilarating ride, and I was all in. Figo’s knowledge of the river was unparalleled, and his ability to read the water reminded me of how I analyze wave conditions before a surf session.
As we navigated the rapids, Figo’s expert commands and encouragement made the experience unforgettable. We laughed, cheered, and even paused to admire the lush surroundings. Figo’s insights into the local flora and fauna added a layer of cultural richness to the adventure, making it more than just a thrill ride.
A Sweet Finish
After an adrenaline-pumping morning on the river, we were treated to a delicious organic lunch at The Boat House Bar & Grill. The view of the Arenal Volcano was the perfect backdrop as we indulged in fresh, locally grown tropical fruits and authentic Costa Rican dishes. It was a moment to savor, reflecting on the morning’s adventure and the unexpected joy it brought.
The day concluded with a cultural insight into the traditional extraction of sugar cane juice. Watching the process and tasting the sweet, refreshing juice was a fitting end to an incredible day. It reminded me of the simple pleasures that come with exploring new places and embracing the unknown.
In the end, the Balsa River white-water rafting experience was a testament to the beauty of going with the flow and trusting in the expertise of those who know the terrain best. Figo’s guidance turned what could have been a nerve-wracking experience into a day of pure joy and discovery.
