From Surf to Rapids: Conquering Costa Rica’s Upper Balsa River
Trading my surfboard for a paddle, I embarked on a thrilling white water rafting adventure on Costa Rica’s Upper Balsa River. With expert guides and breathtaking scenery, it was a day of adrenaline and discovery.
Riding the Rapids: A Day on the Upper Balsa River
The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself in La Fortuna, a place that has become a second home over the years. This time, however, I was trading my surfboard for a paddle, ready to tackle the Upper Balsa River’s Class 3/4 rapids. The promise of an adrenaline-packed adventure was too tempting to resist, and I was eager to see how the river’s waves compared to the ocean’s.
From the moment I was picked up at my hotel, the Arenal Rafting team made me feel like part of the family. Our guide, Braulio, was a whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm, setting the tone for the day. His ability to seamlessly switch between Spanish and English ensured everyone was on the same page, and his humor kept us all entertained. As we drove to the river, he shared stories of past adventures and painted a vivid picture of what lay ahead.
Navigating the Rapids
Once we hit the water, the real fun began. My daughter and I were paired with Carlos Gonzalez, a guide whose passion for the river was infectious. With his expert guidance, we navigated the river’s twists and turns, each rapid offering a new thrill. The first half of the course was a whirlwind of excitement, with Carlos expertly steering us through the more technical sections.
As a surfer, I’m no stranger to the power of water, but the river offered a different kind of challenge. The rapids demanded precision and teamwork, and Carlos was the perfect coach, balancing instruction with encouragement. His knowledge of the local flora and fauna added an educational twist to the adventure, and his playful antics kept the mood light.
A Taste of Costa Rica
Midway through our journey, we pulled over for a well-deserved break. The guides had prepared a spread of fresh Costa Rican fruit, a refreshing treat that fueled us for the remainder of the trip. As we floated down the calmer sections of the river, I took a moment to soak in the lush surroundings, the vibrant greens of the rainforest a stark contrast to the blues of the ocean I’m so accustomed to.
The adventure concluded with a hearty Costa Rican lunch back at the Arenal Rafting headquarters. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, and as I sat there, savoring the flavors, I couldn’t help but reflect on the experience. The Upper Balsa River had offered a new perspective on the power of water, and the guides had made it an unforgettable journey.
For those seeking a break from the waves, this rafting adventure is a must-try. It’s a chance to connect with nature in a different way, to feel the rush of the rapids, and to experience the warmth and hospitality of Costa Rica’s people. Pura Vida!
