Chasing Waterfalls and Volcanoes: A Day in La Fortuna’s Natural Wonderland
When the waves took a break, I decided to explore the heart of Costa Rica with an adventure that promised waterfalls, volcanoes, and hot springs. Join me as I recount a day filled with natural wonders and serene moments in La Fortuna.
A Morning of Waterfalls and Wonder
The day began with a crisp morning breeze as I found myself descending the 500 steps to the iconic La Fortuna Waterfall. The air was cool, and the forest around me was alive with the sounds of nature waking up. As a surfer, I’m used to the rhythm of the ocean, but the rhythm of the forest was something entirely different. The descent was a workout, no doubt, but the sight of the 70-meter waterfall cascading into a crystal-clear pool was worth every step. Some of my fellow adventurers hesitated to take a dip in the chilly waters, but I couldn’t resist. The water was invigorating, a refreshing start to what promised to be an adventurous day.
After drying off, we made our way to the Arenal Volcano. The hike was moderate, about two to three miles, and the volcanic landscape was a stark contrast to the lush greenery of the waterfall. Our guide was knowledgeable, pointing out various flora and fauna along the way. The hike was longer than I anticipated, and while I enjoyed the views, I found myself eager to move on to the next part of the adventure.
Lunch and Bridges in the Canopy
After the hike, we were treated to a traditional Costa Rican lunch. I opted for the fish, which was a wise choice given the lack of cutlery for the pork or chicken. The meal was a delightful pause, allowing us to recharge before heading to the Mistico Hanging Bridges.
The bridges were a highlight for me. Suspended high above the rainforest canopy, they offered panoramic views that were simply breathtaking. Our guide was adept at spotting wildlife, and with the help of a telescope, we were able to see creatures that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. The bridges swayed gently, but they weren’t as daunting as I had imagined. It was a serene experience, walking among the treetops, surrounded by the vibrant life of the rainforest.
Soaking in the Hot Springs
As the day wound down, we made our way to the El Choyín hot springs. Nestled by the Tabacón River, the natural warm waters were the perfect way to relax after a day of exploration. The jungle surrounded us, and the sound of the river added to the tranquil atmosphere. I couldn’t help but think how perfect it would have been to start the day here, letting the warmth ease us into the adventure ahead.
Reflecting on the day’s activities, I realized how much I appreciated the seamless organization of the tour. While I might have rearranged the order of events, the experience was undeniably enriching. From the invigorating waterfall to the majestic volcano, the lush hanging bridges, and the soothing hot springs, it was a day well spent in the heart of Costa Rica’s natural beauty. If you’re looking for a day packed with adventure and relaxation, Arenal Adventure is a must-do.
