Highlights
  • Kyoto Shibori Museum - At the Kyoto Shibori Museum, your Japanese craft class shows you how to dye a 70-inch x 17-inch (180cm x 44cm) silk scarf using the kyo-arashi shibori method. You’ll end up with a beautiful scarf to serve as a souvenir of your trip to Kyoto. Classes are usually individual and take 30 minutes to 60 minutes per class.

Start by learning how to fold your fabric in a particular way and wrapping a pipe in the fabric. Wind a string around the pipe and squish the fabric to the bottom of the pipe , and then dye your fabric with your favorite color. Unwind the string and roll your fabric with a towel, and press it. Then unfold your fabric to see the results.

While your fabric is drying (about 30 minutes), you’ll learn more about shibori. Browse art pieces, tools, and samples displayed in the museum, and try on a shibori kimono, if you wish. The museum shop also sells a variety of shibori items, souvenirs, fabrics, and more.

Fun activity for any age - This was so much fun. You got to choose what you wanted to dye - t-shirt, bag, noren, hanging. Then came the fun of deciding what picture to trace. There are many different designs and sizes of designs to choose from. You do a practice piece then start on your own design. You get instructions and help as you need it. I'd do it again. (For some reason, I was unable to upload photos of my t-shirt.)

A great place to visit - A wonderful place to visit, friendly and helpful people and a amazing displays of Shibori and lots for sale. I ended up with a beautiful silk scarf, even though I wasn't expecting to be able to do a class as we were just walking in on off the street. They also showed us a very informative video. It was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours with a gorgeous souvenir as well. Definitely recommend a visit. It's small but packed with interesting displays & products. Easy to get to on the Subway/ Metro, we were staying near Kyoto station.
