- Togetsukyo Bridge - Spanning the Katsura River, this 155-meter-long bridge is one of Arashiyama’s iconic landmarks. It’s an excellent place to enjoy the surrounding scenery with the Arashiyama mountains as a backdrop.
- Tenryuji Temple - With a rich history, this temple is one of Kyoto’s most renowned Zen temples. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts a stunning garden that offers a unique experience in every season.
- Okochi Sanso Garden - Denjiro Okochi, a celebrated Samurai film actor, spent around 30 years creating this expansive villa garden, covering 19,800 square meters. Surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall, it offers beauty in every season. The view of the Hozu River below and the city of Kyoto is also a highlight.
- Jojakkoji Temple - Situated on the slopes of Mt. Ogura, famous for its autumn foliage since the late Heian period (794-1185), Jōjakkoji Temple features about 200 ancient maple trees that turn red, orange, and yellow, blending with the green moss.
- Nisonin - A serene temple surrounded by beautiful landscapes that have endured for 1,200 years. Known for its autumn foliage, the temple is named ‘Nison-in’ because it enshrines two principal Buddha images. These images resemble twins, with their left and right hands raised and lowered symmetrically. Located a short distance from central Arashiyama, it offers a peaceful retreat.
- Giō-ji Temple - Known as the “temple of tragic love,” it was where a lady dancer, once favored by the powers of the time, spent her days as a nun after a broken heart. The temple grounds are adorned with lush green bamboo and maples, and a moss-covered garden. The window in the hermitage’s antechamber is also noteworthy, reflecting various colors depending on the light.
- Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple - This area has been a burial site since ancient times, initially with wind burial and later earth burial, where people dedicated stone Buddhas to mourn the eternal separation of the deceased. The approximately 8,000 stone Buddhas and stupas on the grounds are the graves of those buried in the area.
- Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple - Dating back to the 8th century, this temple became uninhabited during WWII and was abandoned after a 1950 typhoon caused extensive damage. It was rebuilt in 1955 when Buddhist sculptor Nishimura Kimitomo (1915-2003) became abbot, initiating the restoration of Kyoto’s most dilapidated temple. Known as a “temple of healing,” visitors can relax and find peace among the 1,200 expressive statues of arhats carved by ordinary worshippers.
- Saga Toriimoto Traditional Buildings Preservation Area - Toriimoto is a conservation area at the far end of Sagano, about 600 meters along Atago Highway leading to Atago Shrine. The area features a mix of farmhouse-style buildings with thatched roofs and machiya-style buildings with two floors and tiled roofs, preserving the character of a Japanese rural historical landscape.
- Monkey Park Iwatayama - For animal lovers, this is a must-visit. Approximately 120 Japanese macaques live in the wild in this monkey park. The park is rich in nature, and the monkeys can be observed year-round.
- Bamboo Forest Street - One of Kyoto’s major attractions, this area is filled with thousands of towering bamboo, creating a stunning forest. It’s a magical spot that feels like stepping into a fairy tale.
