- Fushimi Inari Taisha - Among the approximately 30,000 Inari shrines in Japan, Fushimi Inari Taisha stands as the principal shrine dedicated to Inari, the Shinto deity of rice. It is renowned for its Senbon Torii, a breathtaking corridor of thousands of vivid red torii gates that create an enchanting path up the sacred Mount Inari.
Since its founding in 711 AD, for over 1,300 years, people have visited this shrine to seek blessings for abundant harvests, business success, family safety, and the fulfillment of various desires.
- Nara Park - Nara Park is a must-see attraction in Nara City and ranks among Japan’s oldest parks. Spanning 660 hectares, the park is celebrated for its free-roaming deer and esteemed temples. These gentle animals, regarded as sacred messengers of the Shinto gods, wander freely throughout Nara. They have even learned to bow to visitors in exchange for treats.
For over 1,300 years, humans and deer have coexisted harmoniously in Nara. Today, these deer are protected as Natural Monuments and are cherished as sacred creatures within the city.
- Todai-ji Temple - Todaiji is one of Japan’s most renowned and historically important temples, serving as a landmark in Nara. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara,” alongside seven other sites including temples, shrines, and locations in Nara City.
The temple’s main hall, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), was once the largest wooden building in the world. This impressive structure houses one of Japan’s largest bronze Buddha statues, the Daibutsu. This 15-meter-tall seated Buddha represents Vairocana and is accompanied by two Bodhisattvas.
- Byodo-in Omotesando - Uji is renowned for its green tea production, and this delightful street is lined with shops offering a variety of tea and tea-related products. It is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Uji, as it highlights Japan’s rich tea culture and provides insight into its captivating history.
As you walk along the cobblestone path, the air is filled with the delightful scent of freshly roasted tea leaves. Here, you can sample tea-flavored “dango” dumplings, noodles, ice cream, and donuts. Take your time to explore the souvenir shops and eateries. At the street’s end, you’ll find a Starbucks serving its popular Matcha Frappé.
- Kyoto Prefectural Uji Park - Kyoto Prefectural Uji Park is an island park encircled by the Uji River, which splits the water’s flow downstream. The park is linked to the riverbanks by three bridges and features many scenic attractions, including a 13th-century stone pagoda standing 15 meters tall.
In spring, the park offers stunning views of cherry blossom forests, and visitors can often spot birds soaring overhead. Red bridges connect the pathways on both sides of the river, and it’s fascinating to watch ducks diving into the swift river to catch fish.
- Murasaki Shikibu Statue - Murasaki Shikibu, the author of ‘The Tale of Genji,’ wrote during Japan’s Heian Period (9th-12th centuries). This tale is considered one of Japan’s greatest literary achievements. The final ten chapters are often referred to as the ‘Uji-Jujo’ because the main setting of this remarkable literary work is in Uji City. In tribute to this connection, the novelist is depicted beneath a lone pine near the famous Uji Bridge.
Uji Bridge is one of Japan’s oldest bridges, believed to have been first constructed in 646, over 1,300 years ago. The current bridge was completed in March 1996, featuring bronze ornamental caps along its Japanese cypress balustrade. This design preserves the historical image of Uji Bridge and harmonizes with the surrounding landscape. The bridge has long been a beloved symbol of Uji, known for its scenic beauty.
