Fun cultural experience - My son and I did this experience combined with the Kimono Tea Ceremony. We arrived at the museum and had some time to get photos dressed in the samurai costumes before the sword experience. I enjoyed the experience more than I thought I would, as I mainly booked this for my son. While he also enjoyed it, he had hoped we would have learnt more sword moves - a fair bit of time is spent with each group having a video taken of them doing the sword sequence and then photos in the garden. This is great that they offer this as it's a great momento but it does take up a fair bit of the time, in saying that it was still an enjoyable experience and Raito was a really good sensei. The tour of the museum afterwards was really interesting and the ninja star throwing at the end is fun. You're allowed to stay in the museum for as long as you want, however as we had to head straight to the tea ceremony experience, we didn't have time to do this, but they allowed us to come back afterwards, which was great.

Very fun experience, highly recommend. - Raito was our sensei and he was very friendly, helped us through the motions and showed gave us very cool information. Highly recommend him as sensei. Our tour guide, Mei, was also very cheerful and showed us around and was able to do things hands-on.

Samurai in Kyoto - It was absolutely wonderful. We learned how to swing and handle a katana similar to how a Samurai might have. We toured a museum detailing the history of ninja and samurai. We threw ninja stars. We also got to dress up as samurai.

Touristy, but informative and fun - Located in the Nakagyo Ward of Kyoto, the Samurai Ninja Museum is a small museum catering to foreign tourists. My son and I visited the museum in January 2026. NOTE that you should make an advanced reservation for a guided tour time (our tour was conducted in English). You are taken through several exhibit rooms where you learn about some of the history of feudal Japan, as well as the evolution of the armor and weapons used by the samurai. It wasn’t all dry lecture; there was a tactile element where we were able to try on replicas of helmets and hold replicas of some of the weapons. The tour ended with a couple of fun activities – we learned how to throw shuriken (commonly known as “ninja stars”) and then were able to pose for photos in samurai garb. The exhibits were nicely displayed, and the everyone who worked there was gracious and helpful. Having spent many years working in the tourism industry, I tend to be rather wary of this type of attraction, but I have to admit that I enjoyed it more than I had anticipated. If you are at all interested in this part of Japan’s history, the Samurai Ninja Museum might warrant a visit.
