• Bopath Ella (Bopath Falls) - Bopath Falls, named for its resemblance to the bo (Ficus religiosa) tree, is the most extensively researched waterfall in Sri Lanka. It originates from the Kurugana River, which later merges with the Kaluganga River at Kurugaomaodara.

The area’s average temperature ranges from 26.9 to 27.8 degrees Celsius, with an annual rainfall of 5080mm in the fall’s catchment area. The flow rate averages 6 cubic meters per second. The upper section of the fall consists of granite and biotite virin, covered by sand. The water from the falls irrigates the paddy fields in the Udakada and Kuruwita regions.

• Mapalana Ella Falls - Nestled among medicinal herbs, the 141-meter-high Mapalana Ella Falls is divided into three sections and is fed by a stream originating from Thoranabandigala in the Samanala mountain range. This stream eventually joins the Kalu Ganaga river. During the rainy season, the sound of the cascading water can be heard up to 6 km away.

Legend has it that the falls are named after a local nobleman (maapaa) who used to bathe there. The term Maapaa-Nana (place where the noble bathed) evolved into Mapanana and eventually Mapalana.

• Katugas Ella Falls - This small waterfall is located near the town of Rathnapura. To reach it, travel a few kilometers towards Balangoda from Rathnapura until you arrive at Weralupa Junction. Turn onto the small road and continue for about 2 km until you reach a small bridge. From there, take the narrow path and walk until you encounter the Katugas Dola stream. Follow the stream over slippery rocks to reach the slender 6-meter-high Katugas Ella.

Reaching this location may be challenging for elderly individuals due to the need to walk along the Katugas Dola stream over slippery rocks.

• Ratnapura - Rajanawa Ella Falls is a 12-meter-high waterfall located in Ratnapura. Its water is used to irrigate the surrounding paddy fields. According to folklore, King Walagamba used to bathe at this waterfall, giving it the name “Rajanawa Ella Falls,” meaning the falls where the king (raja) bathed (nawa). It is also believed that a hidden tunnel, guarded by stone doors, contains gold at this site.
