Manhyia Palace Museum - Embark on a journey to Ghana and start by watching a video detailing the history of the Ashanti people. Visitors are then guided through various rooms in the palace, showcasing original artifacts. Learn about the significance of the Ashanti empire, including figures like Yaa Asantewaa (the war queen) and the current king. The museum is not adjacent to the field where the Akwasidee tribal chiefs gather every six weeks.
Okomfo Anokye Sword Site - Visitors will discover the origins of the Ashanti people and witness the exact location where the Golden Stool descended onto the lap of King Osei Tutu I, the founder of the Ashanti Nation. This is also where the sword was driven into the ground by the chief priest Okomfo Anokye. History tells us that the sword was embedded nearly 300 years ago, and it is believed that no one can remove it. Even the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali from the United States couldn’t uproot the sword. It is said that the Ashanti kingdom will fall if the sword is ever removed.
Kejetia Market - Experience the local market by walking around Kejetia like a local and learning about the markets in Kumasi central. From a distance, Kejetia Market resembles an alien mothership in the heart of Kumasi. Up close, the rusting tin roofs of this vast market, often cited as the largest in West Africa, are visible. There are 11,000 stalls and at least four times as many people working here. It resembles a circular shanty town. Inside, the bustling Kejetia is quite disorienting but utterly captivating.
Prempeh II Museum - Explore more and gain insights with a personalized tour, including a fascinating introduction to Ashanti culture and history. Among the displays are artifacts related to Ashanti King Prempeh II, including the king’s war attire, ceremonial clothing, jewelry, protective amulets, personal bathing and dining equipment, furniture, royal insignia, and some gold weights. The museum is constructed to resemble an Ashanti chief’s house.
