- Sarawak Cultural Village - Renowned as one of Malaysia’s most iconic cultural attractions, the Sarawak Cultural Village is an award-winning living museum that provides an engaging and informative introduction to local cultures and lifestyles. It features nine authentic replica buildings representing every major ethnic group in Sarawak, including Bidayuh, Iban, and Orang Ulu longhouses, a Penan jungle settlement, a Melanau tall-house, a Malay town house, and a Chinese farmhouse and pagoda. Each building is staffed by members of their respective ethnic groups, dressed in traditional attire and performing traditional activities. Every house has a “storyteller” who is an expert in explaining and interpreting traditional cultures and lifestyles.
After exploring the village, visitors can enjoy a multi-cultural dance performance in the village’s theatre or participate in dance, music, and craft lessons. Additionally, there is an excellent ethnic restaurant and a handicrafts shop on-site.
- Semenggoh Nature Reserve - For over two decades, the wardens at this reserve have trained young orangutans, who were orphaned or rescued from captivity, to survive in the wild. The success of this program has resulted in a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult orangutans in the surrounding forest reserve, who are now breeding in the wild.
Although the program has been moved to Matang Wildlife Centre, Semenggoh remains home to its successful graduates, semi-wild orangutans, and their offspring. They spend most of their time exploring the forest but often return to the Centre for a free meal. During the forest’s fruiting season, some or all of them may not come to feed, which is a positive sign and another step towards full rehabilitation.
