- Kuala Sepetang - Kuala Sepetang is a coastal town in Perak, Malaysia, located about 60 minutes or 72 km/45 miles northwest of Ipoh city. It is a bustling fishing village and the main departure point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, a Chinese fishing community specializing in fish breeding in cages. The Port Weld railway station was once located in the town center. The entire railway line from here to Taiping, the first railway line in the Peninsular, has been dismantled, leaving only the ticketing booth and the Port Weld railway signboard.
- Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary - Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary
A few kilometers at the northern tip of the Matang mangrove forest lies a vast wetland swamp where local and migratory birds thrive. Visitors can see endangered storks, egrets, herons, kingfishers, bulbuls, doves, woodpeckers, magpies, sunbirds, tailorbirds, swifts, sparrows, kites, and migratory birds from the northern hemisphere.
The Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is one of the well-established bird sanctuaries in Asia. It was founded in the early 1970s with the primary goal of protecting and conserving both migratory and resident bird species.
There are over 160 species of birds found in the Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary, including at least 48 species of migratory birds and 118 species of resident or local birds. Migratory birds such as the Eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata), Common Redshank (Tringa totanus), Common Greenshank (Tringa nebularia), Mongolian Plovers (Charadrius mongolus), and Pacific Goldenplover (Pluvialis fulva) can be observed.
- Matang Mangrove Forest Park - The 40,000-hectare Matang Mangrove Forest was designated as a Permanent Forest Reserve in 1906. Today, it is recognized as the best-managed sustainable mangrove ecosystem globally. This mangrove reserve is rich in diverse wildlife, offering nature enthusiasts the opportunity to explore its wetlands and resources. Nearby, the Perak State Forestry Department professionally conducts silvicultural programs of the Rhizophora, Lenggadai, and Seaward berus forests. It is also considered a breeding ground for numerous marine crustaceans, including crabs, shrimps, lobsters, horseshoe crabs, and prawns, as well as fish and shellfish.
The Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve has proven to act as a natural barrier against tsunamis. It is an important site for coastal migratory water birds and some migrant forest birds. Between 43,000 to 85,000 birds may be seen using the forest during migration.
- Charcoal Factory & Souvenirs Shop Kuala Sepetang - The charcoal factory in Matang (Kuala Sepetang) is situated in the heart of a stunning mangrove forest since 1940. Mangrove forests are vital to ecosystems worldwide, and Malaysia is fortunate to have a significant amount remaining. The process begins with harvesting mangrove trees, which reach the required size after 30 years. Once an area is harvested, new trees are planted, and that area remains untouched for 30 years.
Ever wondered how charcoal is made and what is needed? This is a great opportunity to gain additional knowledge. The charcoal factory is owned by Mr. Chuah, who has received excellent feedback online for his ability to share his story and passion for charcoal. Every process in the charcoal factory is manually done by human power. Charcoal production is a lengthy process that requires a lot of manpower.
