- Lenggong Archaeological Museum - After a journey of approximately 3 hours, we arrive at Lenggong Valley, the site of the oldest known human activity in Peninsular Malaysia. The most notable archaeological find here is the Perak Man.
The Lenggong Archaeology Museum is an open-air museum showcasing numerous historical artifacts dating back 1.3 million years. The Lenggong Valley was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 30, 2012.
The Lenggong Archaeological Museum, also known as the Kota Tampan Archaeological Museum, is located in Kota Tampan, near Lenggong. It is a prehistoric site dating back 74,000 years.
After spending an hour here, we proceed to the Royal Town of Kuala Kangsar.
- Lata Kekabu - A refreshing oasis awaits visitors. Here, dip your feet in a pristine, cool mountain stream while admiring the water cascading down a two-tier waterfall. For the more adventurous, hike along the river, cross a rope bridge, and climb up the side of the waterfall for more scenic photos.
- Pavilion Tower - Located across from Malay College Malaysia, this three-tiered building was constructed for the royal families in 1930. The royal families used it to comfortably watch nearby polo matches. Initially, it served as a recreational center for court officials. After renovation, it became part of a public park and is open to visitors. Built under the orders of Sultan Iskandar Shah, it is sometimes referred to as the “Pagoda of Malaysia.”
- Oldest Rubber Tree - Another notable attraction in Kuala Kangsar is Malaysia’s oldest rubber trees, planted in 1877 when rubber was first introduced to the country. These trees continue to draw thousands of visitors from around the world.
- Kuala Kangsar Clock Tower - In front of the Post Office, on a small roundabout, stands an elegant clock tower with a golden dome. According to the dedication plaque, the clock tower was erected in 1939 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI (which took place in 1937).
- Kuala Kangsar Heritage Trail - Nearby, overseeing the town, is a Malaysian Airforce McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawk mounted on a white plinth. This plane was presented to the Sultan of Perak in 2004 and is displayed here.
In the same area is a landscaped public space, Dataran Putra, featuring a fountain, decorative arches, and an old-fashioned British red phone box. The phone box has even been vandalized, adding to its authentic British appearance! There is also a tourist information office where you can obtain a Kuala Kangsar Heritage Trail map.
- Ubudiah Mosque - This is the main attraction of Kuala Kangsar. Ubudiah Mosque is the first place that comes to mind when thinking of Kuala Kangsar. It is considered one of Malaysia’s most beautiful mosques. The golden-domed mosque, with minarets surrounded by coconut trees, creates a captivating sight. Designed by Arthur Benison Hubback (a government architect) and built under the orders of Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah in 1913, it was completed in 1917. An interesting story surrounds its construction: a delay occurred when two royal elephants damaged the marble during a fight, necessitating the marble’s re-importation from Italy.
Adjacent to the mosque are traditional Malay houses, such as Rumah Meor, an all-wooden mansion once owned by one of the Sultan’s retainers.
Another traditional wooden house is Baitul Anor, the former residence of Raja Kechil Sulong Harun Al Rashid, the prince of Perak. This notable mansion was built by the prince for his third wife. The separate yellow balcony is an intriguing feature of the mansion. Inside, you will find old pictures and stories of the royal family.
- Perak Royal Museum - Istana Iskandariah is a royal palace and the official residence of the Sultan of Perak, completed in 1933. This beautiful and historic site is located in the royal town of Malaysia, Kuala Kangsar. The building’s architecture is inspired by West Asia. Facing the sunrise and river, Istana Iskandariah features a royal dining room, audience halls, royal rest chambers, ladies’ cloakroom, music hall, and the royal council chamber. The onion-shaped dome and minarets give it a fascinating appearance.
Visitors can admire this stunning architecture from the outside only.
- Perak Royal Museum - Visitors can view the beautiful architecture of the gold-colored building from the outside only for safety reasons, as the building is fragile due to age.
Formerly a royal residence, it is now known as the Royal Museum of Perak. A closer look reveals the meticulous craftsmanship in the building, with delicate carvings on the roof and walls in contrasting yellow and white colors. The Royal Museum showcases traditional Malay architecture. It is open to the public and tourists daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Remarkably, the building was designed without any blueprint, and not a single nail was used in its construction.
- Sultan Iskandar Bridge - This is one of the four major bridges in Kuala Kangsar, Malaysia, also known as Sultan Iskandar Bridge. It is the longest steel arch bridge in Malaysia, with a total length of 308 meters and a width of 10.2 meters. Constructed in 1932 by Messrs James Craig Ltd, the bridge was officially inaugurated by the late Almarhum Sultan Iskandar of Perak and is a popular tourist attraction in Kuala Kangsar.
- Victoria Bridge - Constructed by the government of Perak between 1897 and 1900, this bridge exudes nostalgic charm reminiscent of railways in classic films. It was inaugurated by Sultan Idris Murshidul Azzam Shah and named after Queen Victoria. It is the only railway bridge crossing Sungai Perak at Karai. The bridge has been out of use since 2002.
At its peak, the bridge was a vital structure during the tin mining industry’s boom, linking the western Malay states with each other and the port of Penang. It is said to resemble the “bridge on the river Kwai” and Guillemard Bridge in Kelantan.
