- Batu Caves - A highlight of visiting here is climbing the 272 steps leading to the temple.
Batu Caves, located in a limestone outcrop, is a unique and captivating cave temple. It comprises three large caves, with the main cave housing elaborate Hindu shrines. This destination attracts a large international crowd during Thaipusam, an annual festival honoring Lord Muruga. A recent addition is the 140-foot statue of Lord Muruga, visible from miles away.
- Sri Shakti Temple - Sri Shakti Temple is the only temple worldwide where manifestations of all 51 Shaktis are installed. Within this space are 96 carved pillars depicting the 96 universal principles of Hinduism. Surrounded by a large decorative wall, entry to the temple is through a magnificent Raja Gopuram (multi-tiered tower). Rising to a height of 74 feet, the 5-tiered Raja Gopuram proudly showcases the architectural treasures within.
The temple’s main entrance features 18-foot high sculptured granite frames weighing up to 4 tonnes, carved by skilled craftsmen from the ancient city of Mahabalipuram in Tamilnadu, India.
- Altingsburg Lighthouse - Situated at the highest point of Bukit Melawati, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the Straits of Malacca. Built in 1907, it has served navigation purposes since 1910. Due to its strategic location, it was also used to monitor the Strait of Malacca. Named after a Dutch General, it was widely used during the British colonial period.
- Bukit Melawati - This ancient fort was built in the late 18th century during the reign of the second Sultan of Selangor. It later succumbed to Dutch cannons. The site is preserved with original foundation stones, cannons, and a legendary execution block. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the coastline from the hill.
The Hill of Melawati is also home to Silver-Leafed Monkeys and Long-Tailed Macaques. Peanuts can be purchased from vendors in the area to feed the monkeys. Although Silver-Leafed Monkeys are generally gentle, visitors should be cautious with Long-Tailed Macaques as they can be quite mischievous. Exercise caution when feeding them as they are wild creatures and can be dangerous if provoked.
- Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park - Kuala Selangor is a small coastal village northwest of Kuala Lumpur, renowned for its attraction along the Selangor River. Here, you can spot the famous fireflies (Kelip-Kelip in Bahasa Melayu) during the evenings/nights. The fireflies are found on the mangrove tree species called berembang, and it is said to be one of the largest firefly colonies in the world.
Fireflies, also known as ‘Lightning Bugs,’ shine brightly at night to attract a suitable partner. They can shine during the day too, but humans cannot see it. They are only visible at night in and along the ‘Berembang’ trees along the Selangor River. Their flashing often becomes synchronized, creating an effect similar to the twinkling lights of a Christmas tree. A trip along the riverbanks at the Selangor River at night is truly magnificent and a must-see attraction.
There are several nice restaurants serving fresh seafood. Restoran Kuala Selangor offers a delightful local meal at Pasir Penambang (1A, Jalan Bagan Sungei Yu). Overnight stays are available in the village of Kuala Selangor or at the chalets at Kuala Selangor Firefly Park.
